Statistics may hold clues as to where improvements can be made continued from p.4 Dawe said the Zero Suicide strategy involves several steps. Some of these steps look at identifying, engaging, and treating those at-risk. Other steps focused on treatment transition and data improvement. "When someone leaves one aspect of care and moves onto another it is an incredibly dangerous time.... Unfortunately, what often happens is the burden to manage that transition is placed on the distressed person and their families," said Dawe. "We tell them to call this number, make your own arrangements. We'll respond to you when you call us. If you miss your appointment, we'll wait for you to call us. We're not alarmed enough in the hospital sector to go out and find that person or to take the burden of responsibility on ourselves that that person does not leave an appointment until they have in their hand their next appointment." Dawe also called for improved data about suicides so that when a suicide does happen healthcare providers can see how it happened and rapidly make necessary changes so it doesn't happen again. Dawe's taskforce was scheduled to submit their report to the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care at the end of October. "I expect that report will generate some interesting conversations," said Dawe. "If that conversation only results in a hospital receiving that report and its recommendations and then turning to its mental health team and saying, `OK, go do that' than I think we have miserably failed.... The target of our report is the boards of directors or the CEOs of the organizations. Zero Suicide succeeds when the entire organization commits to it." During the meeting residents also heard from Halton Region Chair Gary Carr, Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition Chair Marcus Logan and Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario Program Manager for Mental Health Works Mark Henick. 5 | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com HANDHELD BLOWERS WERS · Sleek and ergonomic designs that deliver reliable performance. · Lightweight design perfect to clean-up clippings, debris and leaves. · Exceptional high air velocity.
