"I started going to Emergency (Department at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital) on a weekly basis," she said. "It was terrifying for me." After several visits to the Emergency Department, results from a pap test found something unusual. "In your gut you know something isn't right," said Ingham, noting at times she felt she was frustrating or bothering the doctors. The next few weeks were a whirlwind as a biopsy done at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto con rmed she had cervical cancer. Of cial cancer diagnosis Of cially, Ingham was diagnosed with cervical cancer nearly two months ago. "One in 1,000 women are diagnosed with cancer while pregnant," Ingham explained, noting a tumour had grown to 4.5 centimetres when she and her partner were left with the dif cult decision of weighing whether to terminate her pregnancy at 21 weeks to treat the cancer with radiation and chemotherapy -- and risk never having children again because the treatment would affect her fertility -- or go ahead with the pregnancy and expose the baby to chemotherapy. "We decided because the risks were far and few, we were able to take the chance," she said, noting they chose to undergo chemotherapy because she was told by doctors that during the second and third trimesters, there are several types of chemotherapy that don't put the fetus at risk. Questioning her decision "It was hard, that rst time getting chemo," she explained, as she questioned whether she was doing the right thing. However, Ingham wanted nothing more than to live and see her child. Now, she considers the pregnancy something of a miracle. It has also led to some new friends. Through the online purchase of a diaper bag, Ingham met Oakville resident Sheri Bird. Bird was so impressed by Ingham's energy and personality, she later reconnected with her in regard to a job opportunity and was left speechless upon learning that Ingham was undergoing her second round of chemotherapy, but would be able to meet once the effects subsided and she was feeling better. "I've never had anyone in my life that has been in that particular situation," she said, noting after hearing Ingham's story, she and her business partner, Laura Glynn, decided to stage a Girls' Night Out event, held Oct. 26. Ingham said she's honoured by the gesture. "It's such a blessing...one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me," she said.
