www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | 20 Province boosting its investments continued from p.18 Oakville MPP and Ontario Labour Minister Kevin Flynn, Halton MPP and Associate Minister of Education (Early Years and Child Care) Indira Naidoo-Harris, and Burlington MPP and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Eleanor McMahon, along with Halton Region Chair Gary Carr, jointly made the announcement last Friday (Oct. 28) at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville. Halton's funding is part of a provincial commitment of more than $632 million to municipalities over the next two years to support families and individuals at risk of homelessness. The money will fund emergency financial assistance to prevent eviction, long-term and transitional housing and integrated supportive housing to help people with specific needs access suitable housing, among other supports. "The support we're providing to Halton Region is one of the most important investments we can make," said McMahon. In 2015, CHPI helped nearly 40,000 Ontario families and individuals acquire housing and assisted more than 115,000 families and individuals on the verge of homelessness remain housed, the Burlington MPP noted. "This funding will allow Halton Region to better help families and individuals at-risk, stay in their homes or get the housing they need, through a wider-range of services and prevention programs that meet local needs," said McMahon. Every $15 million invested in CHPI is estimated to support about 2,600 individuals and families to obtain housing or allow 14,200 households to remain stable. "When people have a home, they are healthier, able to pursue employment and are equipped to participate in, and contribute to, their communities in a fulsome way," said McMahon. She noted the Province would provide an additional $15 million annually , $30 million over two years, to CHPI, bringing its total annual investment to almost $324 million by 2018. Through Ontario's Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy, CHPI will see funding increase from $293.7 million in 2016/17 to $308.7 million in 2017/18 and then to $323.7 million in 2018/19. She noted the Province has invested $178 million over three years to ensure people have access to affordable and suitable housing. Flynn said Ontario has pledged more than $4 billion to affordable housing since 2003, which includes the recent federal-provincial partnership to extend the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) program. "We should be proud of that, but by no means should we be satisfied with that. We're not stopping there. One of the programs that our government is probably most proud of is the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI)," said Flynn, noting CHPI was launched in 2013 and is 100 per cent provincially-funded. The Oakville MPP said CHPI provides "proactive and permanent local solutions" to prevent homelessness. see Investing on p.22 IN OAKVILLE LAST CHANCE To LoCk iN 2016 rATES We Pay To Pack & Move You THE END oF THE YEAr MovE iN bY * *CONDITIONS APPLY CALL TODAY ! 905-582-0395 | 3136 DUNDAS STREET WEST, OAKVILLE, ON | www.verveseniorliving.com ALL YOU CAN EAT Lunch or Dinner DiNe iN foR AllYou cAN eAt Saturday, Saturda y, , November N 26TH FROM 10AM - 4PM Enjoy an afternoon of festive family cheer.
