National auto strategy needed: Dias continued from p.12 the pay grid. With more than 5,000 members, the Oakville Local has the numbers to scuttle the deal if they choose to do so. "I think it is fair to say our members listen to their leaders," said Dias. "Our members elect their leadership team to represent them at the bargaining table. It is ultimately our members' decision, as it always is, but we would hope our members would follow the unanimous recommendation." While Thomas did not speak during the press conference, those present heard from Bob Scott, Oakville plant chair for Unifor Local 707. "Battling with the Ford Motor Company was extremely painful," said Scott. "There are things in this agreement that we don't like. There are things in every agreement that we have bargained that we don't like. We believe, at Local 707, that we have bargained the best agreement that we have seen in a very long time. I believe our members are going to be very happy with what we have done.... We did not succeed with Ford Motor Company in reducing the grid to eight years, but we have some incredible gains that we are going to take back and we're quite sure our members will be happy." Ford of Canada declined to comment on the specifics of tentative agreement until its employees have an opportunity to vote on it. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said he was happy to learn of the agreement, which he called a victory for the auto industry in Oakville. 17 | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com I think it is fair to say our members listen to their leaders. "It is gratifying to see that deal come to fruition, and to see opportunity not just for stability and job security, but for future growth and expansion in Canadian auto. The auto industry represents Canada's largest manufacturing sector, Ontario's No. 1 export, and a vital source of jobs and growth for communities like Oakville." "Oakville's auto sector is the source of tremendous innovation and productivity, which leads to job growth and economic prosperity for the entire community. I'm pleased to see what will be continued." Dias noted a successful auto sector in Canada would involve thed development of a national auto strategy recognizing the importance of the sector. rt New guitars sta ages from $199 k c a p ic st u o c a electric & choose from. to s d n ra b p to over 30 S, KeYBoaRDS, ie R o S S e C C a , S aMP LeS, and more!
