www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | 16 Police observing far too many distracted drivers by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Two days after two Halton police officers handed out 13 distracted driving citations within five hours, the same pair managed to catch 18 distracted drivers during a six-hour bike patrol in Oakville on Oct. 25. Constables Marc Taraso and Matt Springstead patrolled Trafalgar Road from the QEW to Cornwall Road from 3-9 p.m. During that time, the officers charged 18 individuals who were talking on their cellphone, texting, checking email or programming their phone's GPS while driving. "We observed numerous distracted drivers using their phones while approaching or stopped at red lights. "This is not only illegal, but is an added danger as there are numerous pedestrians near these intersections given the nearby transit station," said Taraso. "Further, distracted drivers were observed using their phones while in stopand-go traffic. In one instance, a distracted driver had an infant in the backseat. All 18 individuals were charged with distracted driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The offense carries a $490 fine and three demerit points upon conviction. These 18 charges come just two days after Taraso and his partner reported charging 13 distracted drivers in the same area during a five-hour bike patrol on Sunday, Oct. 23. From Sunday to Tuesday, Taraso said he and his partner handed out a total of 37 distracted driving tickets on Trafalgar Road. Halton police are again reminding residents to put their phones down while driving. The local police service notes distracted driving has become the leading cause of death on Ontario roads.
