www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 3, 2016 | 10 IN LOVE With FALL Peace Week agenda packed continued from p.9 Scott will be sharing his personal story of how he took control of his life at the YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace on Nov. 23 at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd., beginning at 7 a.m. It's one of many activities hosted by the YMCA of Oakville as part of YMCA Peace Week, which takes place Nov. 19-26. Acts of kindness are just one of the themes that will be explored throughout the week as the YMCA of Oakville invites the community to think about how each person can bring more peace into their daily life. As a prelude to a number of activities taking place over the week, Freedom Writers will be screening at Film.ca on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 10 a.m. The movie was based on the book, The Freedom Writers Diary, penned by teacher Erin Gruwell. It tells the story of how hard work, courage and determination can change the lives of not only a teacher, but her students as well. Tickets are free by reserving them online on the YMCA Peace Week Activities page on ymcaofoakville.org. Scott was one of the students who ended up at the back of Gruwell's English class at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in the Eastside neighborhood of Long Beach, Calif. As keynote speaker at the YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace, Scott will share how he was able to turn his life around and write "new, more fulfilling chapters in his life -- chapters filled with healing, hope, perseverance, and possibility," as his website describes. Scott is now happily married, a father of three, a homeschool teacher, a successful entrepreneur, a Ph.D. student, an author, an aviator, and one of the nation's most sought-after speakers. For tickets to the breakfast, which cost $25, visit ymcaofoakville.org/get-involved-ymcapeace-week-activities. Other Peace Week activities include the YMCA Candlelight Walk for Peace on Nov. 21 at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA on Rebecca Street beginning at 6:45 p.m. It encourages residents to take a short walk through the neighbourhood and reflect on what peace means to them, the community and the world. A limited amount of candle luminaries will be handed out, so residents are encouraged to bring a flashlight. From Nov. 19-26, community members are also being encouraged to share kindness through Be Kind Bells. A number of the handmade chime bells, which have been decorated by children and youths in YMCA programs, will be hidden somewhere in the community as a reminder to spread some kindness. If you find one, you're encouraged to share over social media where you found it. You can then keep it or hide it for someone else to discover. Use the hashtags #BeKindBell, #ActforPeace and #YMCAPeaceWeek.
