Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville Assembly Plant's Unifor Local 707 may not think much about the deals Unifor has struck with General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler, but Oakville's mayor is encouraged by them. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton is chair of the Auto Mayors, a group of municipal leaders working collaboratively with all levels of government to support Canadian automotive manufacturing. In a press release issued Tuesday (Oct. 25), Burton noted the Auto Mayors are encouraged to see, what they called, an ongoing victory for jobs, growth and innovation in the auto sector through agreements recently negotiated by Unifor. The Auto Mayors noted the initial agreementnegotiated between Unifor and General Motors Canada ensured wage increases and signing bonuses, while also guaranteeing new investment and long-term growth for Canadian auto jobs. The General Motors deal guaranteed production of a new vehicle in its Oshawa flex plant and ensured basic V6 engine production would shift from Mexico to the St. Catharines, Ont. powertrain plant. "This settlement is a tremendous victory for Canadian auto workers and the communities they call home," said Burton in a press release. "This deal protects the stability of existing jobs while creating the conditions for expansion across the province." Using the agreement with General Motors as a framework, Unifor negotiated a new deal One pair. That's all it takes. Just one pair of Blundstone boots will make you a fan for life. No laces. All season. Long wearing. Go anywhere. Spine and joint sparing. So comfortable that--surprise! You end up with two pairs. #585 The Leather Lined in Rustic Brown. $209.95 with Fiat-Chrysler, including a $325-million commitment to rebuild a paint shop in its Brampton plant. "These agreements offer the kind of long-term job security auto workers have not enjoyed since before the 2008 recession," stated Burton. Unifor has started negotiations with Ford, but, Oakville Assembly Unifor Local 707 President Dave Thomas has been clear, if the national union attempts a deal similar to that reached with General Motors, the Oakville membership will not ratify it. The Oakville Ford workers are looking for a better deal that would shorten the amount of time it takes for new hires to top the pay grid. The stakes are high as Unifor attempts to negotiate Ford investment in its Windsor plant. Unifor Local 707's opposition could make these negotiations complicated, particularly when the more than 5,000 Ford employees Oakville has will decide if an agreement is accepted. Unifor has set its strike deadline with Ford for 11:59 p.m. Monday (Oct. 31). In a statement on Unifor Local 707's website, Thomas said the Oakville membership is looking for a proper share of Ford's success. "The company has rewarded its management team with substantial raises and bonuses. We are only asking for a reflection of the hard work and dedication our members deserve. We are only looking for a fair share.... Our position is very clear. Ford Motor Company owes Windsor an investment, but at the same time they owe all members a fair and equitable contract.
