That's because John Vail, Chairman of the United Way o f Oakville, revealed that $1.38 million would be given to 30 of Oakville's health and social service agencies. The figure is the largest amount ever and is up 15% from last year's total. "The amount w e've managed to raise this year is clearly a reflection of the generosity of the people in Oakville," said Vail. "The citi zens and corporations have been very giving with their donations." Groups receiving the largest percentage increase in funds from last year were those that deal with programs for seniors, youth, and multiculturalism. The Halton Multicultural Council received $34,600, up from $13,000 in 1999-2000, a 166% increase. Com m unity Resource Services, dealing with programs for youths to reduce crime, received $26,000, a 160% from the $10,000 it was awarded last year. The Children's Assessment & Treatment Centre (CATC) got $65,150, up 117% from its total of $30,000 last year. "The increase in demand for the services of these organizations means they require more funding," said Deborah Ingham, Chair of Allocations for the United Way of Oakville. "The Halton Multicultural Council has seen the demand for its services increase by 41% and therefore we have increased support." In addition to the $1.38-million base fund ing, another $170,000 will be allocated to new initiative programs within Oakville's health and social service sectors over the next year.
