www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 20, 2016 | 52 Maestro for Oakville Symphony celebrates 20 years with orchestra Oakville Symphony's maestro recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with the local orchestra. With a special reception held at the Oakville Club, the event highlighted the accomplishments of conductor and music director Roberto De Clara, who was given his very-own bobblehead in recognition. The evening, which saw symphony alumni and Town officials in attendance, also acted as a fundraiser for the Oakville Symphony's youth programs, including its outreach program -- an initiative begun by De Clara. The program offers a series of free halfhour mini-concerts for young children to have fun while learning about the distinct sounds, history and inner workings of orchestral instruments -- participants also get to try them out. Oakville Symphony musicians also visit local schools and other locations throughout town to share their love of classical music. Active in both symphonic and operatic conducting, De Clara has been the music director and principal conductor of the Oakville Symphony since 1997. In addition to the success of the Main Series subscription concerts, his tenure at the Oakville Symphony has been marked by several initiatives, such as family Christmas and educational concerts, a series of post-concert chats and a new behind the scenes look at orchestral life and music, titled nOt juSt the Score. Before coming to the Oakville Symphony, De Clara was the music director of the Prince George and York symphony orchestras and artistic director of the Etobicoke Philharmonic. Guest conductor across Canada, world He has been a guest conductor for orchestras across Canada and the globe, such as the Winnipeg Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic, Orchestra London, Stratford Symphony, the Vienna Pro Arte Orchestra and the orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague. De Clara has been the recipient of numerous awards including: first prize in the Austrian-Television Radio (O.R.F .) Salzburg Conducting Competition, the Heinz Unger Conducting Award in Toronto and scholarships from the Canada Council and the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation. The Oakville Symphony was founded in 1967 with the mission to "make music for the pleasure of its members and the enjoyment of its audience."
