www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 7, 2016 | 10 Cyclists endangered by vehicles, pedestrians by cyclists continued from p.6 cerning safe cycling. Having hung up my bicycle due to health issues, I have experienced many episodes as a pedestrian with uncaring and unyielding cyclists this year and last, riding on sidewalks in the downtown area where I live -- sometimes in groups of four or five, but more often single riders. When coming from behind, they yell out "on the left" as they pass, which, at one point, on Trafalgar Road forced me to fall over into a Disposal services and receive 10% OFF the Price of Your All Commercial and Residentantial AAA 905-337-8686 www.aaadisposal.org Oakville Beaver Bin RentAl* Serving Oakville, Burlington, Milton & Mississauga 586 Third Line, Oakville *Some restrictions apply Mention Promo Code 10% Off tree, which fortunately prevented me from actually falling on to the road. After the first cyclist went by, he was silently followed by three others. I caught up to them at the corner while they were waiting to cross the road and pointed out that they should be riding on the road and their response was, `It is too dangerous to ride on the road.' This seems to be the response I get from every cyclist I challenge. Another group cycled behind me through George's Square one day and while I knew they were coming and kept to the right, allowing them plenty of room to pass, one young man braked suddenly and fell over on the pavement in an attempt to avoid running me down because he was travelling too close to the others to see what was ahead. Even on Lakeshore Road, recently, on a busy Saturday morning, a cyclist rode through a crowd of people, including myself, standing or walking along and the young man obviously had no intention of stopping or dismounting his bicycle. He swore at me as he passed and when challenged by a male pedestrian, gave him/us an obscene gesture. I think it might be time to write an article about the rules of the road as they relate to cyclists and remind them pedestrians have the right-of-way and should not have to be frightened to walk on Oakville streets. As a senior, I live in fear of being run down by a cyclist one of these days. Perhaps we need to licence cyclists and teach them the rules of the road. I remember when Oakville had police cyclists downtown and perhaps we need to encourage the return of this type of policing in future, which might set a good example for others. C.
