Halton gives green light to five new red light cameras by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, October 6, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com More red light cameras will be installed in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills. Halton Regional council gave the green light for five additional red light cameras to be installed on Upper Middle Road at Sixth Line in Oakville; Guelph Line at South Service Road in Burlington; Derry Road at Savoline Boulevard and Derry Road at Commercial Street in Milton; and, 10 Side Road at Eighth Line in Halton Hills sometime in 2017 -- provided next year's budget allows for it. Halton Region currently operates 12 red light cameras across the Halton, which has seen a 30-60 per cent reduction of angle collisions, Planning and Public Works Commissioner Jim Harnum stated in his report presented to the Planning and Public Works committee Sept. 7. "The Red Light Camera Program has proven to be a valuable tool in increasing road safety at intersections within Halton region," he said. In a follow-up memo to council members Sept. 14, Harnum listed statistics related to each red light camera currently in operation. This came after a councillor asked how staff had come up with the statistic about It has prevented property damage, it's prevented injuries, it's prevented deaths. We should start thinking about increasing the number because you can't put a price on saving lives. Chair Gary Carr Halton Region angle collisions. Three locations had a 100 per cent reduction of angle collisions -- Trafalgar Road and Leighland Avenue/Iroquois Shore Boulevard; Upper Middle Road at Oxford Avenue; and, Guelph Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington. Other locations didn't see much change. The cameras at No. 10 Sideroad and Ninth Line; and, Trafalgar Road and 5 Side Road in Halton Hills saw a zero per cent reduction of angle collisions. Other camera locations experienced reductions of 33-56 per cent. Harnum said to obtain truer statistics from a network level, region-wide results from each end of the spectrum (zero and 100 per cent) were taken out of the equation. Some councillors want more cameras in- stalled across Halton. Oakville could use all five of the new cameras, and more, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton told the Planning and Public Works committee Sept. 7. Harnum said the Region is balancing resources and prioritizing intersections in need of red light cameras. "There is a cost to operate these and we're just trying to manage that resource," he said. "We currently have $800,000 budgeted per year to operate these 17 cameras and we're just being mindful of the balancing of resources with the outcomes." "A camera wouldn't be efficient at every regional intersection, there's diminishing return with respect to the number of intersections we put red light cameras at," he said. Regional Chair Gary Carr noted he believes having more red light cameras will keep Halton safe. "It has prevented property damage, it's prevented injuries, it's prevented deaths...," he said, adding the cameras work and deliver great results. "We should start thinking about increasing the number because you can't put a price on saving lives," Carr added. $700 OFF HI-EFFICIENCY CENTRAL AIR $ AIRE ONE MADNEss sAlE! /mTH OAC* 29 IN I.E.S.O.
