Free Korean Dogs founder EK Kim said it's been her mission to effect change ever since she helped a Korean woman in her personal plight to buy 20 dogs who were raised on a chicken farm and were destined to be sold to the meat market. Kim, who lives in Toronto, grew up on a small farm in rural part of Dangjin, a city just south of Seoul, and witnessed the dog meat trade firsthand when she was young and more recently has still witnessed cruelty upon visiting. She noted it's been an uphill battle changing the views of people regarding the animals, something she said she learned when she moved to Canada in 2002 and became an owner of two dogs and a cat. "Even animal activists, they are so frustrated," she said, noting the industry is not regulated. Park said Free Korean Dogs hopes to educate and raise awareness. To that end, she has been filming a documentary, titled Compassion Soup: the End of Dog Meat in Korea. She has travelled to Korea, where the non-profit is trying to reach younger generations to be engaged and compassionate about dogs. Dogs are also being rescued, fostered in temporary shelters and adopted into loving homes. Cause 4 Canines hopes to raise $10,000, said Lewis, who also helps The Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. "This can't be taboo. People need to know about it, people need to talk about it, people need to give whatever they can or do whatever they can," she said. "Rescue has no borders and if I saw a dying dog in Toronto, I would love it the same way and pick it up and rescue it the same way I would in Asia," she said. Lewis' vision is to register Cause 4 Canines as a non-profit organization and start an animal sanctuary.
