It's being organized locally by Halton Food for Thought (HFFT) and Healthy Kids Community Challenge Burlington. "As a group, the two of us have invited students, teachers, educators and food enthusiasts to learn more about healthy eating and we're kind of going with the approach of following an apple's journey from seed, to harvest, to market, to table and back," said Nancy Rumple, HFFT's director of communications and development. Biting in to make a noise By taking a juicy bite into a crunchy fresh local apple, participants are making noise about the importance of making the right food choices to maintain a healthy lifestyle, she said. According to HFFT and Healthy Kids Community Challenge Burlington, changes in our food environment, including consuming larger portion sizes and the availability of a wide variety of inexpensive food, have made it challenging for many to maintain a healthy weight. "The proportion of obese children has nearly tripled in the last 25 years and almost 30 per cent of our children are classified as being overweight or obese," the groups state. "Unhealthy weights can influence selfesteem, social inclusion and mental health in children and youth and is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease and premature death in adulthood." Rumple said since its inception there have been 900,000 crunchers coast to coast who have joined FareShare's Great Big Crunch movement. Last year alone, 181,655 people participated at 450 crunch-sites, she continued, noting in its inaugural year in Halton, the uptake of those who have committed to participating has been positive. Registered schools will be receiving free apples and an educational Great Big Crunch video, which includes a countdown that can be played before crunch time. Resources such as an apple-themed activity guide, book list, word search and colouring sheet -- all of which are available for download on the HFFT website -- are also given to the schools so participants can learn more about healthy eating and snacking. Crunch time will vary at participating schools. The events will be open to local dignitaries, politicians, school board members and others interested in joining the Big Crunch.
