vi { Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 7,2003 - 5 ! ntirn : jj|PPgJ|jj*!m , ! ,, l :i i i .. |JfPL jjj pÇ^' by Jeanne Burnside White Blindness Two weeks ago I woke up to a white lawn A-G-A-I-NÜ Although we had a few days of sunshine here and there, all of the snow at my place had still not melted. I thought life and the movies had merged and I was part of a remake of "Groundhog Day". In the original movie, Bill Murray keeps reliving one day over and over. In my version it keeps snowing over and over again. The severity of this winter was especially felt by someone someone like me who has been a bit spoiled by the last few milder and much shorter winter seasons. seasons. Up to this year they were my norm and I would laugh and laugh at friends and family from the States who use to ask if they needed ski jackets when they visited in the summertime. To be honest the entire east coast of the US had an awful winter but their spring came on time and their flowers and warmer temperatures have been with them for the last month. On the other side of this is my Winnipeg born husband who reveled in this year's weather and is happiest when he looks outside to blizzardlike blizzardlike conditions. My one and only trip to that city was in February 1990 and the ice was so thick on the windows in dur hotel room that most of my memories are just a cold blur! When we first relocated to the. area our agreement was that we would spend one winter winter here but after that we would travel or go south for a few months. Because the last few winters were very similar to what I grew up with in New York, I didn't feel the need to get away, although this year has definitely given me pause to reconsider. The beauty of the glistening glistening snow on our hills and cedars is breathtaking to view but the reality of living so secluded quickly becomes apparent. Although my husband husband was bom into a harsher climate, he lived for many years in an urban high-rise that offered round-the-clock maintenance men. I also got used to the amenities after growing up in a "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" rambling older home with my eight siblings. siblings. Maintaining the proverbial "log cabin in the woods" is as demanding a job as I ever had. Creativity and a good sense of humor are a must. This year's find was using disposable diapers diapers duct taped to the ceiling when the ice on the roof stared melting - inside and out. None of that drip-drip-drip racket into pots and bowls anymore! As you can see we still haven't figured out how to use the roof cables properly. But there's always next year. Dogs in detention Mr. Dez Farkas of Moffat Road Newcastle will have to keep two of his ten akita/collie/shepherd cross dogs in an enclosed pen to prevent them from leaving their property and coming in contact with people and other animils.
