6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, April 13, 2005 Ticknor competing at National Junior Ringette Championship Alarma Ticknor, 14 of Orono, is competing this week at the Canadian National Ringette Championship in Winnipeg. Ms. Ticknor, plays ringette for the Whitby AA Junior team, a team that consists consists of mainly 16 year olds. The Junior Whitby "AA" team won a thrilling 6-4 win over Nepean in March to represent represent Ontario at the Nationals. Whitby finished the round robin play at the provincials provincials with a record of 5-1, outscoring their opponents 42- 16. The Ontario team will now compete against the best ringette players from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Ringette was first developed developed in 1963 in North Bay. The game is an exciting, fast paced sport that combines speed and strategy. The game is played on any standard rink with five skaters and a goalie, with the object of the game, to score on the opponent's net. A straight stick of wood, fibreglass or aluminum is used to pass, control control or shoot an 8" hollow ring between teammates. Play is started by a free pass, similar to the start of a soccer game. The player taking the "free pass" has five seconds to pass the ring to a teammate, any stoppage in play will result in a free pass to re-start the game. Ontario ringette boasts a. membership of over 80 asso-. ciations with over 13,000 participants. participants. At press time team Ontario are tied for second in the standings with 2 wins, no losses. In their first game Ontario beat out Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan, 3-2. In the second game Ontario beat the host team 6-4.
