Durham rolls out regional transit system Regional council got on board with a Regional transit system at their last Regional Council meeting. Councillors voted 21 to 2 in favour of amalgamating the four existing existing municipal transit systems into a Regional system byjan- uary 1, 2006. The transition should take about a year, and when in place, the transit system will offer seamless inter-municipal travel within the Region, in cooperation with GO Transit. Clarington Council were unanimous in their support for a regional transit system when they voted on the proposal last December. Clarington's Director of Engineering Services, Tony Canella, said he couldn't be happier about the decision. Clarington Transit began operations in September 2002 with two bus loops through Bowmanville. In November 2003 they expanded that services services to include a bus loop to Orono twice a week and a loop to Wilmot Creek retirement retirement community three times a week. Clarington Transit costs the municipality approximately $20,000 a year to operate, with the buses. and service contracted from the city of Oshawa. "We're at the point our service is maxed out," said Canella in a phone interview with the Orono Times on Tuesday. If the decision had not been made to move transit to the Regional level of government, government, Clarington would have to expand their own system, system, he said. The estimated cost to operate operate an amalgamated transit system, in 2006, is $38 million million based on preliminary fig ures. That amount will increase incrementally every year, and is anticipated to rise to $50 million in 2009 to accommodate the construction of a new transit facility. Clarington's portion of the Regional transit costs, when it is fully integrated in 2006, is approximately $3 million. The Region will start investigating where new routes are heeded and how to improve existing routes. A monthy pass for adults is anticipated to cost approximately approximately $70, seniors will likely pay $20 a month where two student passes available; an unrestricted pass for $60 a month, or a school only pass for $50 a month.
