4 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, February 9, 2005 1 ' ill Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Poor Lily The picture of me and the little woodchuck in last week's paper stirred quite a controversy. People thought that the little fellow was a stuffed woodchuck. How in the hell could a kid like me at six years old stuff a ground hog? . I got the groundhog off an old fellow that lived on the ninth Concession of Clarke Township. His name was Oscar Skelding. He was a bachelor that lived one mile north east of Leskard in a log house. The groundhog was more like a dog than a woodchuck. He would follow me everywhere. everywhere. I had her for a couple of years. She was easy to look after. She lived in a hole in the ground where she slept at night and hibernated in the winter. One day she was playing alongside the highway and this old Ford car came flying up the road heading for Pontypool and ran over poor little Lily. The car never squashed her, she just had a little blood on the end of her nose. Through the tears, I got my jackknife out and skinned the poor little thing. Then Mr. Skelding gave me a board and I scraped the fat off her little hide and tacked her to a board to tan. Later on when her hide was tanned, a kindly old lady from Pontypool made me a hat. I didn't exactly look like Dan Boone with his coon-skin hat, but I didn't look too bad. I've had lots of pets since then. A few times, I was someone's pet--but not for long. More money for MRI machines Lakeridge Health will receive one-time funding of $138,000 to perform an additional additional 540 MRI examinations. This is part of à $5 million commitment announced last week by the provincial government government to add to the number of cardiac, cancer, CT and MRI procedures. This announcement is welcome, but it is also long overdue. In my view, the additional funding has occurred only because Ontarians have continued their advocacy for shorter waiting times. The provincial government government also announced an investiment of about $120 million to replace aging CT and MRI machines, as well as older cardiac equipment and to up-grade cancer therapy therapy equipment. Technology in healthcare is a future cost driver because diagnostic tools, like computers and cell phones, need regular upgrades and replacement. However, as PC Health Critic John Baird pointed out last week, the funding is merely for replacements. Health-care experts are calling calling for a net increase in the number of CT and MRI scanners, scanners, not merely the replacement replacement of old equipment, In addition, the announcement of more funding for new CT scanners is meaningless unless there is also more funding attached. In the past, CT scanners have sat dormant in some Province ol Ontario hospitals for hours cacli day because the hospitals hospitals did not have the provincial provincial funding to operate them.
