Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis The fair I went to the Brooklin Fair on the weekend and they sure put on a good show. The only thing I miss is the horse races, but the tractor pullers have filled that void. Things were quiet compared to the last time I went to the fair. The girl that I went with was a little on the frugal side. She refused to spend money on parking at the fairgrounds or let me pay. "We'll just park on the side of the road and walk the two and a half miles to the fairgrounds", she said. "The walk will do you good and if you get hungry, you can get a few pieces of berry pie that the United Church ladies are selling." After walking the two and- a-half miles and nearly getting struck by a few vehicles, we finally made it to the gates. One adult ticket I said, and a senior's pass for the missus. You could hear her swearing in downtown Brooklin--but I saved her two bucks. The fair was good and so were the three pieces of berry pie that I ate. That brings me back to the last time I went to the Brooklin Fair. I had gone to the fair to see the horse races and make a few bucks. After an evening of betting and a lot of drinking, a girl from Oshawa offered to take me back to a party at her place. That was all fine and good but, surprise, surprise. Her husband or boy friend was sitting sitting on the porch waiting for her. Needless to say, I hit the air and was on my way. I ended up down at the park sitting on the bench where I finished my refreshments refreshments and went to sleep. Early next morning I was awakened by the sound of birds at day break. I wandered up town to get a coffee and some smokes only to discover I only had a few cents change. Just enough for a coffee. When seven o'clock rolled around, I went to see a fellow I had done some drinking with. He gave me a few smokes, breakfast and loaned me a couple of bucks. We were sitting on the sofa when his wife noticed I had a knot in my sock and brought it to my attention. I knew I made a bunch of money at the fair and I guess I had hid it in my sock while I slept on the bench. There was about $500 in my sock and everything was just wonderful that day. I went from being a mere pauper to a near millionaire in no time. A fine fair after all. The Province of Ontario is launching consultation into proposed reforms of the Ontario Municipal Board. The OMB is a special tribunal that has the responsibility to deal with land use planning disputes that cannot be resolved at the municipal level. I would be especially concerned if the Province attempted to take away some of the independence independence the OMB has in resolving municipal matters. Otherwise, disputes will end up in our backlogged court system. There will be a public meeting on planning reform in Pickering June 24th.
