Councillors heard from a number of bar owners who said a smoking ban would put them out of business. As the by-law no reads, private clubs, race tracks, bingo halls and casinos are exempt from the 100% smoking ban. The bar owners said that if their patrons were not allowed to smoke they would go to private clubs like the Region's many Legion Halls and drink there. The Region's Health and Social Services Committee held public meeting through the summer seeking the public's public's input on the ban, and feel their proposed total smoking ban in .public places is in keeping keeping with the wishes of Durham residents. Clarington Councillor Charlie Trim did not vote in favour of sending the proposed by-law back to the municipalities municipalities because it is an unnecessary unnecessary delay.. The first time the by-law was sent to the eight municipalities, municipalities, Clarington requested that work places be exempt from the total ban. That exemption was rejected by the Health and Social Services Committee. The municipalities have till February 2003 to get their comments in to the Committee. The proposed by-law is to take effect in June of 2004. November picks from the Clarington Public Library The Life of Pi: by Yam Martel (2002 Booker Prize winner!)
