Orono Weekly Times - Wednesday, August 28,2002 -5 (Adk Places I've J Done Time A WÊMIIMBHHm Troubled Times TipS Oil hOW tO SpOt 3 grow hOUS© ...continued from front For quite some time now I haven't had a girlfriend. Years ago one could put an ad in the weekly paper like the Family Herald or the Farmer's Advocate and pick himself up a nice catch. I have been half entertaining that thought lately. lately. I tried that years ago and got a fairly nice girl. She came from up near Sudbury and was part French and English. It was nice. When she swore at me it was in French and not knowing any French, I never took it too seriously. The first steady girlfriend I had was when I was 16 or 17 years old and I remember telling mom about her. "She's a nice girl mom, but she's awfully ugly," I said. Mom just smiled and said "You have to start somewhere Clifford." Most times you are sad when you lose your first girl, but I didn't take it terribly hard. Now, getting back to the girl from Sudbury... we talked and talked back and forth on the telephone for a few weeks and I went to Sudbury the. odd week and took her to the horse races in Sudbury and out to the hotels on Saturday nights. We got along well and in early spring she came south. I had a fairly good job and she stayed home and cooked and watched the soap operas. She was a wonderful cook and soon had started packing on the pounds. Things went well until I decided to take a couple of race horses that weren't any good for racing any more and sell them to some folks up near Elmira. Myself and a friend loaded them in a truck and trailer and headed out. I left Simone at home to look after the farm. When we got to Elmira, no one wanted the horses but instead told us we could sell them in the States to the Amish folks. So, it was off the USA and Amish country we went. When we arrived in Pennsylvania, we couldn't find a buyer right away so we stayed over and sold them at a horse auction. Five days had now elapsed since I left home. There was a big horse sale in Philadelphia so I thought maybe we should go there and see what there was to buy cheap. When we got there, the sale was three days away and Has your subscription run out?\ Call 983-5301 for renewal. we decided to wait. Everything was very expensive in Philadelphia but someone told us the fall sale in Lexington, Kentucky was on and since fall was coming, horses would be cheap. Off to Lexington we went and turns out--the sale was the following following week. What the hell, why not lay over for the week. I was in big trouble at home any way. After a week of having a great time, the sale started. Everything that had feet sold dear the first two days. Everyone said things would go cheap on the last day. However, the last day of the sale was the worst. All the horses sold sky-high. Three-andra-half weeks had passed since I left home. I couldn't go home with an empty trailer so I slipped into Georgia and bought two nice Georgian mules and headed home. On the way back we decided decided to make a quick stop in Henderson, .North ^Carolina tç see a guy I knew arid ended up staying out the week. Upon leaving when we were loading up the mules, one ran off. It was nearly five weeks from the. time I left home and my story was going to be that I was giving the mule to Simone for a wedding gift. The swearing started as soon as I walked in the door. Undaunted, I kept to the plan and said, "Simone, this is your wedding gift." The mule went to the very next sale. Simone took the money and bought a ticket home and I was alone again to do as I pleased. Maybe I'll wait a little longer. Long before the arrest was made at 36 Orono Division Street last Thursday night, neighbours knew the house was being used as an illegal marijuana marijuana grow house. Activities observed around the house since the new owners took possession last October, were not consistent with an average family dwelling. Following are some tips provided provided to the Neighbourhood Watch Committee from the Durham Regional Police on what to look for if you suspect a grow house is operating in your neighbourhood.
