Henderson has been entering entering his giant pumpkins in the Orono Fair and the Co-op competitions for the past six years, and he says he does it just for fun, and the competition competition is friendly. In fact Henderson gets his giant pumpkin seeds from Wayne Kennedy, his strongest competitor. competitor. While he grows the giant pumpkins just - for fun, Henderson says he's learned a lot over the years, like not using cold water on his plants. With a little help from his friend Gary Thompson, water is pumped up from the creek and stored in barrels till it warms up a bit. Then the water, about 90 gallons a day, is released into the pumpkin patch through soaker hoses. Henderson has learned that cold water slows down plant growth, and its much better to water the soil than the plants. Henderson says he puts farm manure on the patch in the spring, and has a secret fertilizer fertilizer concoction he uses through the growing season. With only a week left for the Orono Fair, Hendrson has to try and keep his giant fruit healthy and get them to the fair in one piece. Continued on page 9 year's Durham Central Fair. Projects submitted must be no larger than two feet wide by two feet long, by three feet high. This size restriction is firm. Last fall, about 16 entries were placed on display. "We had a little bit of everything," says Flora Sharpe, chairperson of the woodwooking committee. "There were flower, planters, birdfeeders, some items made' on a wood lathe, some wood carvings, book ends and more." In addition to the display, there will be live demonstrations demonstrations by a woodworker skilled in the use of a scroll saw. "We've been to all the fairs and this is the only one in the region that has a woodworking woodworking show," says Mrs. Sharpe. Giant Pumpkin Contest The cold spring got the pumpkin growing season off to a slow start this year, but Keith Henderson of Best Road says things are growing good now. In fact, he feels this is his best year ever. The pumpkins are putting on about 8 pounds a day right now says Henderson. He said his biggest pumpkin last year weighed 325 pounds, but he feels he's got a bigger one Keith Henderson working the pumpkin patch.
