Places I'Ve Done Time by Clifford Francis Sailing Along For the last couple of weeks, I have been working down near the marina in Newcastle. The slap, slap, slap of the waves got me thinking about one summer I spent on the water. The boat I owned had come to me in a roundabout-way roundabout-way of sorts. I had met a girl name Sarah who was going to Nurse's College in Peterborough. Peterborough. Sarah came from a small fishing village on the shores of Nova Scotia. After she received her nursing degree, she decided to remain in Ontario and work for a few years. I liked her more than just a little and she liked me allot. There was only one problem however--Sarah wasn't accustomed to race horses. She asked me one day for her sake if I would take up some other sport rather than one with horses. Against my better judgement I agreed and promised her that, at the first opportunity I would sell my horse. Shortly thereafter while racing in Belleville, I struck a deal with a gentleman gentleman I had met in a bar and dealt my horse for a boat. When 1 got the boat home, someone said "it wasn't wasn't much of a boat". I replied, "it wasn't much of a horse". The boat had been in dry IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE IN THE TIMES 983-5301 dock for some time and it leaked badly. By this time, I found out Sarah wasn't much for boats either. "I've been around boats all my life" she said. "I'm sick of them." Most of that summer was spent repairing the boat trying trying to stop the leaks. Finally, after gallons of tar and pounds of corkum, I had the boat ready for its maiden voyage. Sarah called it a dory and I called it a punt, a skiff, or a scow. I wasn't sure which. It was a warm day when we set sail--well, not really. We didn't have a sail. Actually, it was an old motor. Off into the wonderful wonderful blue yonder we went. As we chugged along, I trolled for fish and Sarah sunbathed on the deck. After some time it started to get a little foggy and Sarah suggested we head back to shore. "Which way", I wondered. wondered. I had no compass and no idea where we were. After several hours with little or no panic, we ended up over in Rochester picked up by the coast guard. They could not believe we made it across Lake Ontario in that old scow. They gave me a good bawling out before letting me dock and we weren't allowed to go back in the boat. I made a phone call and had someone with a truck and trailer come around the lake and pick us up. The expense was worth more a than the boat itself and Sarah never went out on the skiff again. I on the other hand got a compass and continued to go out fishing. I just drifted along pretending I was Huck Finn floating down the lazy Mississippi. That came to an abrupt end one afternoon when I slammed into the side of a big lake freighter. I was so relaxed I'd fallen asleep and didn't see it coming. coming. My boat sank within minutes and they hauled me aboard then dropped me off at the harbour in Toronto. Oh well, summer was all but over any way.
