Page 11 â€" Great Canadian Town Band Festival â€" June 14-16,2002 Neii Jeimshun International Toronto is home to one of the most exciting bands to emerge in recent years. Neu Jenarashun International works hard not only to keep the musical traditions of the Caribbean alive but also to ensure that it is shared with all lovers of good music and fun. One of the premier West Indian dance band ensembles in Canada, the group has been bringing the rhythms of Calypso, Soca, Chutney, Reggae, Soul and R&B to all kinds of audiences during their three years of existence. This collection .of 11 dynamic musicians special- izes in the best of the past, present, and future by per- forming traditional and con- temporary West Indian dance music. To this mix, the band's members add their own com- positions and fresh orchestra- tions to many favourite Calypso and Reggae stan- dards. The band's high level of performance can be traced back to its formation in 2000 when a promoter needed a group to back up singer, Talpre at the Grenadian Showdown. He hastily out together and formed the band "Passport", which instantly created a strong musical pres- ence and a week after the Showdown, the group decid- ed to stay together. However, the name, "Passport", had to go, and with a new millenni- um dawning, the group's members felt that they were a new generation. So in typical showbiz style and to be dif- ferent, they came up with the name Neu Jenarashun. While they may have progressed from their early roots, the band's playing and arranging skills still make'them one of the most sought after groups for backing up visiting International Stars on stage, when they perform in Canada. The band's current roster still retains three members from that original group, vocalist Seon Anthony, trom- bonist Colin Rowe and key- boardist Duane Sampson. The rest of the line-up now includes, Jan Morgan, Dexter Evans and Raymond Blake on trumpets; Ron Hull, gui- tar; Duke Adams, bass; Andrew Spencer, drums; Susan Grogan and Gavin Williamson, vocals. One of the qualities that make this band unique is its appeal to a wide audience of both West Indians and Canadians. Their successful appearances in 2001 at Canada's Wonderland and the Frenchman's Bay Festival in Pickering and an invitation to the Great Canadian Town Band Festival in Orono this year, is proof of their popular- ity. Neu Jenarashun International performs for thousands of music lovers ' each year from coast to coast and maintains a busy per- formance schedule during the summers. A tradition of musi- cal excellence, one of the core values of Neu Jenarashun International, is maintained through rigorous practice and rehearsals for every live performance. Each member of the Band brings to the stage a wealth of educa- tional and professional expe- rience, which greatly enhances every musical selection in its repertoire. Neu Jenarashun International is proud to con- tinue its long-standing com- mitment to musical excel- lence and their motto, "It's the music that matters most...
