Page 3 â€" Great Canadian Town Band Festival â€" June 14-16, 2002 The 48th Highlanders of Canada Pipes and Drums The 48th Highlanders of Canada were formed as a Militia Regiment in 1891 as a result of the spirit and dedica- tion of a determined group of Scottish Canadians who pre- vailed in the face of official apathy. The first Commanding Officer of the Regiment was Lieutenant- Colonel J.I. Davidson. The tartan the Regiment wears is the "Davidson Tartan", worn by all ranks in the Regiment as well as the Drummers. The Pipers wear the "Stewart of Fingask" tartan. The Regiment is still an active part of the Canadian Reserve Army and is the second high- est of any active regiment in Canada in battle honours awarded for service during the South African War and World Wars 1 and 2. The reg- imental crest bears a falcon's head and the motto "Dileas Gu Brath", (Faithful Forever). The present Commanding Officer is Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Sergeant, CD. The Pipes and Drums have always been an active part of the Regiment and can trace their history to two original company pipers who were instrumental in the formation of the Regiment. They were Pipers George Murray and Charles Munroe. Today the Band not only functions as a band but also must take part in regimental activities, as well as military training. The Pipe Band has been involved in many internation- al shows and tattoos over the years. The Band dropped out of competition after this until 1987 when Pipe Major Sandy Dewar brought them back into competition in .Grade 2. In 1988, the 48th won the North American championships in Maxville, Ontario. In 1989, a junior band was formed and in 1993, they won every competition they entered and were upgrad- ed "to Grade 3 for 1994. The Grade 2 band won the North American Championships for the second time and in 1994 won Championship Supreme. The present Pipe major is Chief Warrant Officer Sandy Dewar, MMM, CD.
