^ 8 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 1, 2002 O'Toole (continued from page 7) include carrying bills through the house or its committees, leading ministry consultations, consultations, and taking charge of specific programs or policy initiatives. I have appreciated the opportunity to serve as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Jim Flaherty, during the past year. My duties in that capacity capacity included leading consultation consultation on insurance and small business issues. Regardless of my responsibilities at Queen's Park, please know that my first priority is to the constituents of Durham Riding. Trillium Gift of Life Network Last year in Ontario, more than 300 organ donors made it possible for'doctors to perform perform close to 620 transplants, as well as many more tissue transplants. The Trillium Gift of Life Network has the challenge challenge of significantly increasing increasing organ and tissue donation across the province through its role in planning, promoting, promoting, supporting and coordinating coordinating organ and tissue donation. The network is carrying out the Ontario government's dedication to the development and implementation of an organ and tissue donation strategy. There are currently eight organ transplant hospitals hospitals in Ontario. In 2001/02, more than $6.6 million in funding was approved to support support and encourage the organ and tissue transplantation programs programs in these hospitals. Unfortunately, organ donation donation in Ontario and Canada continues to be insufficient to meet the needs of potential transplant recipients, resulting in many adults and children awaiting a life-preserving transplant. For further information on organ donations, please call the Trillium Gift of Life Network for your organ and tissue donor card (1-800-263- 2833). Together with concerned local citizens, I believe we have, despite frustration, been heard by the Minister. The government is expediting expediting its consultation with stakeholders on standards and testing requirements for these materials. This will include an immediate review of the consultation consultation and notification requirements of land application application programs, recognizing that it is important for municipal municipal councils to have their concerns addressed. There will also be a review of the criteria for issuing certificates of approval. Chris Stockwell (Minister of Environment and Energy) and Helen Johns (Minister of Agriculture and Food) have reaffirmed the government's commitment to Bill 81 - the Nutrient Management Act - in the upcoming legislative session. The bill, if passed by the legislature, would provide us with the tools to reduce the environmental effects of land- applied nutrients while ensuring ensuring a sustainable future for our agricultural industry.
