4 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 3, 2002 Orono's Major Plumbing Novice Rep team won all four games during an Easter weekend hockey tournament in St. Catharines and captured the championship. The entire Orono team put forward a tremendous effort. Tyler Webster had the honour of being named Most Valuable Player in the final-match. - Novice Reps tournament champs This past weekend, the Major Plumbing Novice Rep team captured the championship championship in the annual Spartan Easter Hockey Tournament held in St. Catharines. The Leafs were unstoppable, winning winning all four of their matches. On Friday night, the Leafs took on a Huntsville club and dominated the ice, winning by a score of 5-2. Goal-getters for the Leafs were Tyler Webster (2), Sean Bargeant, Carson Quinn and Spencer Cole had singles. Saturday's game 2 saw the Orono Leafs taking on a team from Humphrey. Again, the Leafs were on fire, taking control of the match with a 5- 1 decision. Greg St. James scored two goals for Orono, while Sean Bargeant, Eddy Meester and Spencer Cole each potted one. Later that same day, the Leafs returned to the ice and faced off against the Belmont Rangers. The Orono team kept up a fast pace and beat out the Rangers, 5-1. On Wednesday, March 27, the Atoms won 6-3 against Haleiida's M & D Meats. 'Digger' Mathew Mercer. scored Orono's first goal after working hard taking the puck from one end to the other. 'Lightening' Jevon On Sunday, in the final match of the tournament, the Orono Leafs once again went head-to-head with the Belmont Rangers. It was a heart-stopping match that left the crowd breathless. The game went into sudden death overtime. The Rangers were first on the scoreboard, but Tyler Webster answered with Orono's first of the game. Assisting on Webster's goal were Will Kirby and Anthony Bortolazzo. Shortly thereafter, thereafter, the Rangers scored and took back the lead. In the third period, Carson Quinn fired a goal past the Ranger's goaltender to tie up the match. The third period ended with a 2 all tie and our Leafs prepared themselves for the sudden death overtime. With less than a minute remaining, it seemed the Leafs would be going into a shoot-out. With 45 seconds on the clock, Greg St. James made an awesome pass to Tyler Webster, who had no problem zinging one past the Ranger's goalie. Orono's goaltenders did not falter the entire weekend. Coming up with save after save were Ryan Brandt and Patrick Rempel, who kept the opponents off the scoreboard as much as possible. Tyler Webster was awarded the MVP honours in the final match. The Orono Leafs showed tremendous team effort and came home as the well-deserving Novice Champions. -KS Orono's Major Tyke team, sponsored by National Power Skating, ended their playoff season with a 4-4 tie with Ontario Power Generation, and a 6-1 loss to Power Workers' Union. Orono goals went to Tyson Robinson and Zachary Gibson (with a pair each), and a single to Evan Rosseau, assisted by Tyson Robinson. The Orono Tyke team of Jacob Dolley, Jonathan Austin, James McAlpine Michael Richards, Jacob Lyle, Tyler Meijer, Hunter Chad, Zachary Gibson, Tyson Robinson, Corey Peelers, Tyler Batson, Evan Rosseau, Tristan Packwood-Greaves, Maria Ferren and Stefan Fabricius had a fun season and wish to thank the coaching staff of Paul Rosseau, Paul Gibson, John McAlpine and Terry Richards. Also we wish to thank our team sponsor National Power Skating. -HM Staples scored a pair while 'Eliminator' Kevin Jackson, 'Fast Learner' Neale Aziz, and 'Hustler' Mitchell Harding each potted singles. 'Boxer' Harley McColl, 'Flyer' Andrew McClatchey, 'Dominator' Cody Dulbecco, and 'Boss Man' Zack Flood each had assists. Good goaltending goaltending was performed by 'Cujo' Bryce Cochrane and 'Golden Glove' Tanner Johnson. Winger 'Work Horse' Chad Moore played tough, challenging the opposition. opposition. Orono ended up losing 3-2. On Sunday, March 31, Orono won 3-0 against Durham Regional Police Association. Neale Aziz, Derek Snow, and Mitchell Harding each scored singles. Zack Flood, Mitchell Harding, Jevon Staples, Kevin Jackson and Mathew Mercer each came up with assists. -JM Stuff's finish round robin It was a week of hockey for the Stutt's Novice Hockey team. They played three games, which they won, lost and tied, in that order. Last Tuesday they played with coupon ' * - Stutt's Salutes Troy Dillon scored his first goal against Newcastle, winning 4- 1. On Saturday morning they lost 6-3 to Williams' Audio Video, and in an early morning morning game on Sunday they tied Bowmanville, 2-2. They are now done the round robin and will be playing playing for the 'B' Division Championships over the next couple of weeks. The big scorers for the week were Stosh Fabricus, who scored in every game, racking up 5 goals in total, and Brandon Cox, who earned a hat trick in the first game of the week. The only other person to score was Troy Dillon; it was the first goal in his hockey career. His mother, Ellen Dillon, said, "He told me this morning he was going to get a goal!" When asked about it, Troy Dillon admitted with a smile, that he had a feeling lie was going to score that day. -AD
