The $675,000 special provincial grant is to be used to purchase four rapid response units (RRUs), three ambulances and their related equipment. The purchase orders for the RRUs had to be completed by March 31, 2002 in order to retain that portion of the grant - $317,252. The remainder - $357,747 will be dedicated to three previously purchased land ambulances. The grant does not cover the cost of staffing the new vehicles* however, Mr. Richard Armstrong, Director, of Durham Region's Emergency Medical Services states that 50 per cent provincial provincial funding for the related staffing is expected to be announced shortly. The intention is to use three of the rapid response units as the first response to 911 calls in the municipalities along the lakeshore. Oshawa's Mayor Nancy Diamond stated at Wednesday's Regional Council meeting that she was • having difficulty with the report that recommended the provincial grant be accepted. "As we so often hear, there is only one taxpayer and there is no freebie," she stated. She voiced concerns that the roving roving utility vans would be a fourth tier response along with ambulance, fire and police. "We're going to be the laughing stock," she said, adding that all that emercency personnel was inappropriate when someone just slid off the road." Diamond was also concerned that money was being spent on a spare vehicle, vehicle, but suggested that a spare might be in order since the vans were Ford products.
