Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 9 J Last Word (continued from page 8) his and her toilets in the entrance, I think every boy and girl waited to get to school to use them. We lived beside a highway so we could catch a bus into Hamilton for major shopping or dental work. After 3 years we moved to another village north of Hamilton, a cement block . house with a porch right across the front of the house. I used to roller skate on it as there were no sidewalks and the roads were gravel. It was over a mile to walk to school, half way there was a hill, as high as the ski hill, in the winter we took our sleds so we could ride down the hill both coming and going. There were no snow plows only graders, so they didn't clean the roads bare. The house was heated by a cook stove and a smàller stove in the living room, we always had a window in the bedroom left open with a winter screen in it, in case of coal fumes, mine froze open and I woke up to below zero degrees F one morning. This was more modem living, living, for we had electricity, an inside pump, and a radio, but the privy was still outside outside and sometimes it wasn't easy to get to it as it was halfway down a hill, this was tricky in the winter and the early spring. Travel wasn't a thing we did very often, we came to Kendal every August, this usually took a full day, by bus or by the goodness of a neighbour we went to Hamilton, took the train to Toronto, then we usually had to wait hours to get a train to Starkville or Pontypool, then we wpuld .be taken by my uncle to Kendal. I remember the first time we drove here in our own car, after I was married and had the 2 boys, I was telling them about my first trip on what is now the 35/115 Hwy. I said it was a gravel road and it jogged at each concession. My youngest son piped up, being real smart and said, "were there Indians here then?" The next time you are tempted to tell your children or grandchildren, that you wish you were back living in the Good Old Days, and how wonderful, or hard they were, remember, we loved them because we were, "young, in the Good Old Days."
