Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday , March 27, 2002 - 9 \N yoJsiit oat tht lûùt wmd Places I've Done Time Times certainly have changed since I was a kid. Guns were plentiful and easy to obtain. Go into any hardware store and if you had the money one could purchase a firearm. It was a pretty nice feeling walking down the road with a rifle slung over your shoulder shoulder or a nice revolver tucked snugly in your shirt or belt. Lots of .times I would walk into Pontypool and buy a couple of boxes of 22 shells. Each box contained fifty shells and cost a half a buck each. Then I would walk home and plug anything that looked like it was going to move. Cans, bottles and telephone telephone insulators, anything at all. How I ever lived is a mystery. mystery. I would put twelve gauge shells in a 10 gauge shotgun, 30.30 shells in a 3.03 and all kinds of wrong shells in other wrong caliber by Clifford Francis of guns. I would find old revolvers that weren't fit to hold let alone shoot. I made things that exploded explode just to hear the noise. They now call them pipe bombs and it's against the law to make them. Nlaybe it was years ago. I don't know. Once I remember wanting to be like John Wesley Hardin, a famous bounty hunter from Texas. I took a nice 12 gauge shotgun that I had acquired and cut both barrels off with a hack saw. I totted it around until one of the local Police Officers saw it. He calmly took it and broke it over a rock, gave me a kick in the ass and sent me on my way. "No more sawed off shotguns," he said. Over the years I did have a couple of slight mishaps with guns. The first incident was when I had a 22 calibre revolver with a long barrel. ARE YOU FRUSTRATED WITH YOUR JOB SEARCH? ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS OBTAINING EMPLOYMENT? While practicing my quick draw I pulled the trigger before it came out of the holster holster and shot myself in the foot. The second incident was when I rested my short barreled barreled gun on my hand thinking thinking it was my long barreled revolver and shot myself in the hand. Funny, now that I think back, alcohol was involved both times. Guns were very recreational. recreational. I spent many fine Saturdays going to turkey shoots. It was lots of fun hunting pheasants or rabbits or just going out and shooting shooting at playing cards to see who could get the most pickles pickles in a card. Another great pastime was going to the local dump to shoot at the rats or over to someone's farm to shoot woodchucks. Times change and the gun laws have. For the best. I don't know. I feel sorry for Police Officers in this day and time. Most people don't have guns anymore but the criminals criminals still do. For some reason I couldn't hit anything that moved or was alive. I certainly had thousands of rounds of practice. practice. Someone asked me if I had ever killed anything. No not really I said. Then I smiled and said that lots and lots of times I killed a forty ouncer of rye on a Saturday after noon.
