The Leafs, were undefeated in all four preliminary games including final matches against Newcastle and Ops. ' On Thursday, the Leafs travelled travelled to Newcastle, and played one of their most memorable matches. The Leafs were score- ' less in the third period, while Newcastle led the scoreboard with two. With only three minutes minutes remaining, Adam Duke took control of the puck and buried the puck past the Newcastle goaltender. This started a chain reaction as '20 seconds later Eddy Meester scored a fabulous goal lying" the game. Just when the Orono fans thoûght it couldn't get any better, better, Spencer Cole hammers one home for the Leafs. Assisting on the winning goal were Jesse Desourdy and Greg Si. James. Newcastle fought hard to regain the lead but were unsuccessful. The final result was 3 - 2 in Orono's favour. Ops was in Leaf territory on Friday and the Novice Rep. team rose to the occasion. The Major Plumbing team dominated dominated from start to finish. In the first period Spencer Cole potted the first of many off a pass from Ty Simpson. Ops answered back, but the Leafs were unstoppable in the second period. Spencer Cole scored his second of the game off a great pass from Sean B argent. The Ops team scored twice in the third, but the Orono Rep. squad took the match by a score of 7 - 3. Goaltenders Patrick Renipel and Ryan Brandt were solid throughout the preliminary series. The entire team now anxiously anxiously awaits the quarter finals , against Bobcaygeon. On Friday, the Novice Rep. team travels to Bobcaygeon and is back on home ice for game #2, Sunday at 4:30 p.m. KJ Stutt's Novice turn fortunes around with a three game winning streak No-one could have predicted predicted the huge wins Orono's Novice Hockey team took this past week. After a season of losses (except for a few exhibition exhibition games and a league win due to a no show) the team whipped Bowmanville's Cactus Clothing team 8.-1 on Saturday. They played two exhibition games prior to the game which they also woji, 5- 4 to Newcastle on Friday, and 3-0 to Grafton on Sunday night. » Stosh Fabricus and Brandon Cox were unstoppable in the first inning of Saturday's league game, getting five goals* between tile two of them. It was only a few minutes minutes into the game when Fabficus got the puck from Cox in the Orono end by the net. He took it around the goal, skating confidently, qnd effortlessly deked out his opponents. He moved up the ice and deposited the puck in the Bowmanville net. Only a minute later he did the exact same thing! He came around the Orono net again, again deking out everyone, everyone, but this time when he tried to shove tire puck in the Bowmanville net the goalie stopped it, deflecting it out. There was a short scuffle around the front of the net and Fabficus moved out to the side. When fellow team mate, Kurils Zwolinski passed the puck out to Fabficus, he shot it toward the net, the puck seemed to move in slow motion through the goalie 3 s legs and gently hit the* steel bottom of the net, bouncing back only a little. A few minutes later Fabricus pulled the routine again! Tris time on a pass from defenseman Cory Weis. Fabricus skated around the Orono net and all tire way up with his opponents unable to stop him. Tre Bowmanville team helplessly followed at a distance and watched while Fabricus tipped his stick and flipped the puck up into the net. It was unbelieveable, but two minutes later Fabricus pulls the same stunt!* Going around the Orono net again and all the way up. Tris time though, 'Brando' Cox' was beside him, and it was a good thing. The goalie blocked the shot and - the puck came toward Cox by his skates, he ■ couldn't get "his stick alound it. Treo DeVries was behind Cox and took a swipe at the puck but there were a number of people around the net by that time, and the puck got lost in the scuffle. Fabricus managed to get his stick on it and passed it to Cox who scored! ... Tre last goal • in the first period came out .of a scuffle around the Bowmanville end. Erik Easton passed the puck to Cox who scored, making it 5-0 for Orono. Tre whole team did a great job keeping the puck in the Bowmanville end, and during the whole first period, new goalie, Kevin Schoenmaker, only had two shots on net. eBowm an ville managed to pull off a breakaway per minute for most of the second period, but Schoenmaker was phenomenal, stopping them all! Using his gloves, gut, ' stick and even his skate as he fended off all the shots ! (Where was this guy all sea-' son?) Schoenmaker started his goalie career just the day before, Friday night's game, but, man, he's a quick study! It wasn't until the last two minutes of play that Orono scored again, Christopher Hermansen passed tire puck to Kurtis Zwolinski who took it up and scored. Then just before the buzzer went defenseman Nicholas Lawrence passed tire puck to Drew Rocha who shot it in. Making the score, before the third period 7-0. There was a scuffle in front .of the Bowmanville net and Erik Easton passed the puck to Mackenzie Tyce who shot it in! It was the last goal for Orono. It looked like Orono would have a shut out, but if they did, Mr. and Mrs. Schoenmaker would have to contribute $5 to the pizza party. So Kevin did his parents parents a favour and let one slip by, making the ending score in 3 Orono eliminated Lakelield , in three games straight in a best of five playoff series. Game #3 saw Orono score mid-wax into the first, only to have Lakefield tie it on a power play. Scoring tor Orono was team captain, Tyler Knight from Adam Tollett Early In the second, Orono regained the lead on a goal by Rob Milford, unassisted. unassisted.
