Voter turnout for Monday's Municipal election was an all time high at 41.9%. In the race for Mayor, Candidate John Mutton received 8,717 votes, (44%), 22% more than his next clos est rival, Mary Novak. Mutton says he was not at all surprised by the spread. "We had a, very good feeling throughout the Municipality," stated Mutton, at his victory party, "and we've had one of the best campaign machines 1 this town has seen for years." Municipal Clerk Pattie Barrie attributed the high voter turnout to the combination combination of the new 'Mail in Vote' system and the interesting race for mayor. In 1991 voter turnout reached 39%. That was the year Diane Harare ran against incumbent Marie Hubbard, and won. John Mutton was ahead in all the Wards but one. Mary Novak got 3,800 more votes • than Mutton in Ward One - Courtice, where she lives. The only real contest of this election was the Regional Ward 3 & 4 seat. Incumbent Charlie Trim and Willy Woo were in a tight race the minute the numbers started cpming in. By the time the last ballot was counted shortly after midnight, midnight, Trim had racked up 126 more votes than Woo, at 3,408. Ann Dreslinski got 1900 votes. The new Ward 4 Local Councillor is Gord Robinson, who collected 2,462 votes, (continued page 2) Children at Kirby Centennial School cheered a real live Canadian hero for Remembrance Day. But James Shaw isn't a war veteran or even a member of the military. He is a gold- medal Paralympian.. As an international competitor, competitor, he was honored by Kirby students last week for doing his part in building good international international relations. Shaw has several medals to his credit - the latest is a gold from the 2000 Summer Paralympic Games in,Sydney, where he threw 39.57 meters in men's category F38 discus: Four years ago, at the Games in, Atlanta, he also took home gold for discus, as well as gold in shotput and bronze for javelin. Athletes from all over the world make friends arid get along, Mrs. Purrott said to her Grade Threes, "They are helping helping keep countries peaceful so we don't have wars." Bringing home a gold didn't come without sacrifice and determination on Shaw's part. Although he lives in Newcastle, he must travel at his own expense to train at a facility in St. Catharines, Ontario.
