(NC) GO Transit is striving to become part of the family for the 4.9 million residents in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Wet'tworth area, says Managing Director Gary McNeil. He told the first-ever Toronto Smog Summit this summer: "Most people think of GO as a commuter service, and we are trying to change that. We want people to think ot GO as their transportation solution anytime of the day or week, 1 ' He told the meeting of officials, which included federal and provincial cabinet ministers, that there can be no debate that GO Transit contributes to a healthier city by encouraging people to leave their cars at home. It Has a variety of ways of promoting transit travel, such as group passes for families attending summer attractions. Mr. McNeill says: "If we all support clean air and better public health, then we all support public transit." GO Transit moves 40 million people a year, up four percent from last year, with 150,000 riding the GO each work day. ' Referring to the increase in annual, ridership, Mr. McNeil says if these new riders drove to work, there would be about a half million more cars on the road during the summer months alone. Each would be emitting greenhouse gases which affect the health and wellbeing wellbeing of Canadians, particularly those with heart or lung problems. As well, the emissions contribute to climate change which can result in more frequent extreme weather events, such as droughts, winter storms and tornadoes. - News Canada The Community Wilh Future MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON APPOINTMENTS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD The Council of Corporation of the Municipality of Clarington will be considering appointments to the Clarington Public Library Board pursuant to the Public Libraries Act.
