A swinger with the beads Mac Ransberry, SKINLINE The Answer to Skin Care by Dr. John Romano Dry Skin and How to Prevent It Dryness is the number one skin problem problem we dermatologists see in our patients. Anyone who has suffered from dry skin is familiar with the rough, scaly appearance, and the accompanying itching itching and chaffing. Some people suffer from it year round while others may experience the symptoms only during the winter months. But, take heart- rough, red, flaky skin can be helped. Dry skin is the result of one or more factors that strip away protective oils or cause moisture to evaporate. These factors factors include too much exposure to the sun's harmful rays, harsh soaps, strong winds, low temperatures and humidity, air conditioners, central heating, saunas, overly long or too hot baths and showers, showers, tight clothing and poor nutrition. Age is another factor. With age, the skin cells weaken and lose the ability to hold moisture. When there isn'tenough moisture, the surface of the skin first shows signs of scaliness .and roughness: hands are generally the first area to show these signs. If not cared for, the skin then begins to shrink and crack. The. more cracked it becomes, the less effective it is as a guard against bacteria which can cause it to become infected and inflamed. inflamed. There are warning signs to look for. Ask yourself these questions: Does your skin feel tight or itchy after bathing? Does it look dull or feel rough? Does it feel'raw, tender or sore, and is it sometimes sometimes red? If you answered yes to even two of these questions, you-have dry skin. The quickest way to revitalize dry skin is to soak the dry area in moderately warm water for ten minutes. Gently blot with a towel. Remove only dripping water; you will want some moisture left on the skin surface. Immediately coat the skin with lotion to seal in the water. If you have dry skin, stay away from thin, watery products because the water, although it may feel cool bn the skin, _ tends to evaporate quickly and does little • to heal the roughened area. ■ Look for a lotion that is oil-based and contains petroleum jelly. Vaseline Dermatological Dermatological Formula® is brie of these "water-in-oil" hand and body epiul- sions which block evaporation. Here are additional ways to soothe dry skin and keep it healthier and younger looking. 1. Humidify your home or work area. 2. Take shorter baths arid showers and use warm, not 1 hot, water. • 3. Avoid dry saunas. 4. Blot your skin after bathing and apply a lotion on damp skin. 5. Wear protective gloves when your hands are exposed to water, or when you're gardening or out in the cold. 6. Be sure your diet includes sufficient Vitamin A (yellow vegetables, fish and milk) and Vitamin E (leafy green vegetables and whole grains). 7. Avoid sunbathing altogether or wear a good sunscreen at all times while outside.
