Babes in Bookland by Dorothy Robinson Magazines The Young Naturalist Foundation Foundation publishes two successful Children's magazines. "Chickadee" is designed for ages 3 to 8, while "Owl" is geared to children 8 to 12. The excellence of their cover design, graphics, feature writing and photography has garnered these magazines 5 awards. "Owl" first appeared in 1976 while "Chickadee" celebrated its 10th birthday this year. Circulation figures indicate that both are hits. They feature many fun activities and their contests encourage reader participation. Both magazines are a great source of pictures and information information useful for school projects. With school resuming this week, project assignments will soon be on the horizon. Be sure to order a subscription for the student in your life. Chamber heads support Wilsons' new tax The chairman of both the Port Hope and the Cobourg Chamber of Commerces join'a minority as they give their support to the new Michael Wilson tax. • - It is felt that the proposed tax does improve the manufacturing sector thus creating jobs. The Canadian Chamber has given their full support to the planned planned tax. Hearing continues A 17 year old young offender charged with the murder of two teenagers on February 28lh will again appear in court on September 8. The hearings arc being held to decide if charges against the accused accused should be heard in adult court. Charges against the youth stem from the double killing of Frank Battaglia, 15 of Hope Township and Rob O'Connor, Peterborough last February. They were found in the Battaglia home in Hope Township. They had died of gunshot gunshot woitnds to the head. Not on agenda of ' local board of education The local board of education, according according to Wilf'Day, Port Hope, is not about to change their search policy which was established in 1986 which only makes provision for a locker searches. The by-law was to be enforced within thirty day of notification. The Town has put a hold on the enforcement of the law until further debate is given to the issue. Computers keep track on illeeal garbage Durham Region has a new weapon to help Fight contractors who dump illegal garbage at the Oshawa Rit- son Road transfer station. The station is for the sole use of residents with household garbage and items for recycling. for kids Crisis Assistance and Referral Service (VCARS). According to S/Sgt. Irena Lawrenson, OPP's "Good Bear"' provincial coordinator, the 12" tall teddy bears are being being placed in emergenpy kits used used by VCARS volunteers in the three regions where the project is in operation. "We are delighted to share our "Good Bear" program with the Ministry's Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Service," said Lawrenson. "OPP officers who have given a "Good Bear" to a child know what a difference a teddy bear makes." Since the "Good Bear" program program started earlier this year, OPP officers have given dozens of teddy bears to Ontario youngsters who were victims of motor vehicle accidents, family violence situations, and criminal activity including sexual sexual assault. All 1,000 OPP cruisers, aircraft and " boats carry OPP "Good Bears." "Often the children are forgotten-in the aftermath of a traumatic family crisis. The OPP "Good Bears" are a welcome addition to our emergency kits," said Morty Fine, VCARS Project Manager. Teams of VCARS volunteer counsellors began working in August 1987 in the District of Algoma, ftie County of Brant and the County of Frontenac. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, the two-person voluhteer teams have a 20 minute response time to calls for help. The volunteers offer victims of tragic circumstances or criminal activity emotional support, support, practical assistance and referral to appropriate helping . âgencies. Typical of those helped are the victims of crime including domestic and sexual assaults. VCARS volunteers help families that have experienced a loss of a member through sudden sudden death such as traffic accidents, accidents, drowning or suicide.
