Orono team plays in final of tournament The Girl's Softball tournament held in the Orono Park on Saturday, Saturday, August 19th was a day of unending surprises. It was a great day of ball with some seventy girls involved in two teams from Orono, one from Tyrone, Hampton and Solina. There was little doubt that Hampton's team was hot with three straight wins earning first place in the tournament. Orono I Novice (above) placed second with Solina receiving the consolation honours. Coaches and parents alike were very proud of the sportsmanship and team efforts put forth by all the girls. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 23, 1989-5 Orono boys finish summer hockey play Scott and Danny MacDonald of Orono werè involved in a summer hockey program, this year. The two brothers, after completion of the winter season, were chosen to play for the Central Ontario Novice Selects. This team, which was based in Lindsay, played in several tournaments and exhibitions exhibitions games against "AAA" teams from Ontario, Quebec and the eastern United States. Scott's major novice team (9 year old) had a very successful season, winning 3 of the 5 tournaments tournaments they entered. Danny's minor novice squad (8 year olds) played in only 3 tournaments, tournaments, but were runners-up in the Ontario 'Cup and semi- finalists in the prestigious Ottawa Ottawa tournament. This team, ended the year, ranked second in Ontario. Scott played centre on a line with a boy from Nobleton and one from Port Perry. He ended the year,with 15 goals and 12 assists. Danny's linemates were from Huntsville and Gravenhur.st and he had 14 goals and 11 assists. Bowmanville man killed in automobile accident Terrance Beckett, 31, of R.R. 6 Bowmanville was killed in a two-car accident at Holt Road and Bloor Street early Saturday night. David and Steven Vandyke of the second car of the same address address suffered minor injuries. "Where Town and Country Meet 5 ' The Port Hope Fair board is preparing for their 158th annual Fajl Fair which will be held at their fair grounds on September 15,, 16 and 17. The theme for 1989 is "Where Town and Country Meet'. » Kendal Eagles one up on Port Hope Flyers The Kendal Eagles have gain- ' ed a one game edge in their series with the Port Hope Flyers to represent the EOBA at a tournament in Burlington on Labour Day. The series is the best four out of seven with the count now resting at 3 games to 2 for Kendal. Kendal. Play resumes tonight (Wednesday) in Port Hope and a Kendal win would place the eagles in Burlington. If a' seventh game is required it will also be played in Port Hope on Friday evening. Both games are 7:30 p.m. games. Last Wednesday Port Hope kept the Eagles in irons when ■ the Flyers took a 7 to 1 win. Jim Newton scored the sole Kendal run with a homer. On Saturday Kendal bounced back from the start edging out a 7 to 5 victory. Sunday before a large home crowd the Eagles again stayed out in front of the Flyers with the initial scoring starting in the third frame. At the end oi the fifth the score stood at 6 to 3 in favour of the Eagles. In the sixth Port Hope tied the score at six all but Kendal came back in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run and a 7 to 6 victory. Doug. Pikel was the winning pitcher on the Kendal mound. Jim Newton was strong at bat with a two-run homer and a single while Mike Robipson , belted out a two-run double and a single. Pikel and Dennis Knapp. ' According to Gerry Thomp r son the Eagles are looking to settle the outcome to-night, Wednesday, with a victory in Port Hope. Entertain at C.N.E. World champion figure skaters Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini have been entertaining entertaining at the C.N.E. at 15 . minute programs. The entertainment entertainment does not have the pair on skates but rather they demonstrate basic pairs routines, present a video of glips and answer questions. They also sign autographs.
