8-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 2, 1989 Bill Bramah and his Ontario . I've quaffed the odd cup of herbal herbal tea from time to time and found it a refreshing change. Besides, it's given me a fleeting feeling of self- righteousness that I've risen above my ususal caffeine-oriented ways. But I never became really interested interested in herbs until I met Jan Longboat. She's a wise woman in her middle years who has the quiet serenity you sense so frequently in native people. As a child, she learned much about herbs and healing at her grandmother's knee. But later, she also studied for four years at the: School of Natural Healing in London, London, Ontario to become a qualified natural health practitioner. These days, aside from having a private practice, she teaches at Mohawk College. Her "clinic" is in her beautiful woodsy home new Little Buffalo, south of Brantford. The medicines she dispenses come from her garden of herbs as well as those she gathers in the spring spring and the fall from the forests and the fields. Jan uses herbs with both familiar and unfamiliar names like sage, hyssop, coltsfoot and April King. The herbs are dried for lengthy periods, then ground in a mill and kept in jars in a small room off the kitchen of her home. Jan treats people for everything from arthritis to the common cold. Camomile is used for sleeping, comfrey for healing a rash or been sting. A drink containing burdock is for internal cleansing. It must be started on the day of the new moon and carried through a 28 - day cycle. cycle. If such things strike you as mere superstitious in this materialistic age, it should be remembered that many centuries-old, tried-and-true healing techniques have been loêt in the scientific shuffle. And many are being revived with some success. But Jan, believes that true, healing must begin from within. "It begins with the mind, both physically and spiritually," she says. "The negativity of stress, anger and guilt must be erased of holistic medicine to be effective." By the way, just in the realm of trivia, 1 discovered that the word "herbs" can be pronounced with the "h" being sounded, or with the "h" being dropped as in "erbs". Apparently, it's optional. Characteristically, Jan says, "whichever way you find most comfortable. New Youth Skills program announced Three new programs designed to prepare youth for skilled occupations occupations were announced today by Skills Development Minister Alvin Curling. The Youth Skills Programs include include the Ontario Traineeship Program, Program, High School Apprenticeships and Summer Trades Experience for students. Mr. Curling explained that the new Youth Skills Programs are part of the Ministry's over-all strategy to help develop skills, training and work experience among young people. people. The new initiatives focus on skills, rather than on job creation. "These initiatives will allow* young people to acquire the skills which are critical in today's demanding demanding and fast-changing economy," Mr. Curling said. "The booming economy in Ontario means jobs are not hàrd for most young people to get. But it is often difficult for young people to get the skills they need for rewarding careers." The new Youth Skills Programs were included in the government's recent Speech from the Throne and budget. They are added to the Skills Development Ministry's array of youth programs. "Fast-changing technologies mean that all workers require a ♦ higher level of skills to be productive productive in the economy," Mr. Curling^ said. "These new initiatives are designed t6 help provide those skills to our young people." The Ontario Traineeship Program Program will offer new workers on-the- job and classroom training in skills to meet the demands of today's workplace. Training will last one or two years. The Ministry will consult with business groups, unions and educators on the design and establishment of traineeships. It will also provide funding toward the direct on-the-job training and in-' school costs. High School Apprenticeships for senior high school students will allow them to attend school and work as apprentices at the same time. During the school year, eligible eligible students will take regular high school courses while they train as apprentices. They will complete credits for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and will gain experience experience toward apprenticeship qualifications. Windsor, Timiskaming and Wellington Wellington school boards will begin high school apprenticeship programs in September, 1989 and 26 other boards have expressed interest in offering the program in 1990. "By combining apprenticeship with high school, many young people people will graduate with the skills necessary to develop a rewarding career and the educational qualifications needed to adapt to changes in the economy," Mr. Curling said. The Summer Trades Experience Program, beginning in 1990, will give employers who train- apprentices apprentices a $1,000 subsidy to. hire high school students for nades-related summer jobs. The Skill Development Ministry will spend up to $6.6 million on the development of these new programs in the first year. A study recently conducted by the Ministry, entitled, "Pathways" found that young people who do not attend university or college often have trouble getting the skills training they need to succeed in the workplace. "These initiatives provide new skills training opportunities for young people while they are still in high school as well as after they enter the workforce," Mr.' Curling said. "They also increase their awareness of skilled . trades careers." Other youth programs administered administered by the Ministry include: FUTURES for employment- disadvantaged young people; Environmental Environmental Youth Corps which provides experience and training in environmental-related activities; Start-up which provides interest- free loans to young entrepreneurs, and the Summer Employment Program, Program, which offers a variety of work experience and training, in summer jobs in government. The price decrease is due to a drop in the conversion rate. Not all eggs produced are large, therefore , a conversion rate is built into the pricing system. The conversion rate is the difference in price between .Grade A large eggs and the average price the farmer is paid for all eggs.
