The subject of discussion was residential development in the nor thern section of the former Township of Clarke, the Oak Ridge Moraine. Elva Reid chaired the meeting and stated that some 1400 hundred acres of land had been assembled by developers which would have the effect effect of taking the land out of agricultural production. She said there were concerns as to Council calls for study of Oak Ridge Moraine Council of the Town of Newcastle Newcastle gave full support to a résolution ■ on Monday calling for the Region of Durham to undertake a com- ■ prehensive study of the Oak Ridges Moraine in the former Township of Clarke as it would pertain to possible possible future residential development. The resolution was presented to council by Counci Hamre pointing out that the area is the headwaters of the Ganaraska River and a major water supply for the-'watershed. She also noted that the Oak Ridges Moraine was a sensitive area and that extensive reforesting had been undertaken to correct a. problem problem resulting from land practices at. the turn of the centurv. She said there was a lot of concern concern in the area over major land acquisitions.,. acquisitions.,. Hamre said that although there were no major applications applications before council people still held to a great concern. She suggested that council may have a problem in responding to any application that may arise in a knowledgeable manner without sound information before them. She said if development does arise in a major way it would be a major qjiange for the area. We don't need another Courtice, she said. She said she was calling for the study in order that knowledgeable 1 (Continued page 3) Council denies parking in residential area Council of the Town of Newcas-, tie accepted the recommendation of the General Purpose committee on Monday voting again denial of application application for rezoning by Rose Marie and Mel Hartwig. The rezoning application would have allowed the parking of vehicles, now prohibited, in a residential area. It is the second time that the Town has handled the application. Co une. Hamre had the item lifted from the General Purpose committee committee report and a recorded vote was called on the issue. Hamre said she was not going to again speak on the issue but would vote against the denial. Mayor Hubbard and along with Conns. Deegan, Hannah, Hooper and Wotten voted for denial. Town to meet with Ministry of Health The Newcastle Hydro Liaison Committee is to ineet ,with the Ministry of Health either on March 2nd or 9th. The meeting is the outcome outcome of a request to the Ministry with discussion to centre around the need for a baseline health study as it would relate to the operation of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Station. The committee has called for the meeting following a recent meeting when Dr. R. Bertell pointed strongly strongly for the need of such a study. Counc. Hannah had asked the Mayor if the meeting had been setup setup on Monday. The Mayor answered the -possible dates of the meeting. Mayor Hubbard also pointed out that replies from the Ministry and Dr. Jean Gray, Medical Officer of Health for Durham as they related to a baseline health study were now available for committee members. ORONO TOWN HALL EUCHRE RESULTS The Orono Town Hall euchre results for February 8th are as follows; High scores for the evening were Marie Couroux with 95; Wes Wood with 92; Elaine Doty with 87; Mary Thompson with 81 and Fred Yeo with 80. Low score for the evening was Ruth Grady. Winners of the draws were Marg Linton; Hilda Caswell and tyorma Moffat. Euchre every Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. Ladies please bring lunch. , ORONO SENIOR CEES MEET FOR EUCHRE The Orono Senior Gees met in the Oddfellows Hall on February 9 at 1:30 p.m. with 22 present. During a short business period Hilda Caswell and Stella Carson volunteered to be in charge of the March 9th meeting, and Gladys Greenwood read two short poems. Euchre was played for the rest of the afternoon with the following winners: High Lady - Dora MacDonald; High Gçnt - Wes Woocl. Low Lady - Myrtle Reid; Low Gent - Jean Allen and Doris Wannan tied (men's cards) Wes Wood won the "bingo". Everyone then enjoyed a tasty lunch. (Continued page 3) Derek Barnett, memberpf Clarke Museum Board and Mark Jackman, curator, proudly display a Massey-Harris Reaper which arrived arrived in Orono last week for storage at the Orono Armouries. The Reaper has been donated by Vanity Organizations, new owners of Massey-Ferguson. The Reaper was brought from the National Museum of Science and Technology, Ottawa, and dates back to the 1890s. This particular piece of farm equipment was a factory factory showpiece and has never been used on a farm. This is the 1 second piece of Massey equipment now in owner ship of the Museum. They will go on .display in the proposed new Museum building. It is the intent of the board to hold a couple of open events at the Armouries this summer so people can see what goes ,on with the Museum behind the scenes.
