4-<>rono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 4, 1989 SPOR Orono Atoms make astounding comeback Tri-County Novice Hockey Action Last Thursday night brought a terrific Christmas present to côach Cord Burnham. Major's Muffins rose to the occasion and tied Whitby Whitby 1-1. Granted it was a tie, but consider the fact that on their previous meeting Whitby had demolished us 8-2 and you realize what an immense improvement the team has made. The boys showed grit and fire throughout this game and actually outplayed and outshot the Whitby team. In a game where every team member gave one hundred hundred percent it is difficult to single out any one player for applause but Orono did receive great efforts from Tom Wakefield on defence, and a super forechecking from Simon Weagant. Jeff Parry showed "cobra-like" reflexes in goal. As a matter of fact Parry stymied Whitby Whitby on a number of breakaways. Excitement and tension were building as the opponents were tenuously clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the third period. With less than 15 seconds left Steve Bonneau took the puck at his own blue-line and skated his way through the entire Whitby team and fired a beautifully angled shot by the goaltender. The final score was 1-1. Congratulations to the boys on a superb team effort. Team manager was so excited that he was heard to say that he wished to take the team on tour and that he had a scheme to raise $5,000 for that purpose. On Tuesday, December 27th, Orono Atoms played one of the top rated teams, Baltimore and lost 4-2. in no way did the Orono players disgrace themselves in this game. Jonathan Noble, Jeff Gates and Jeff Goodmurphy put in strong defensive performances. On Thursday, December 29 Orono Atoms played in the annual Manver's tournament. In the first game Orono played Oshawa's little NHL Canadians and lost 7-2. The game was actually much closer than the score would indicate as the Oshawa goalie made several outstanding saves. Orono's fust goal came at 9:20 of the second period with Jonathan Noble scoring on a strong hard shot. Assists went to Jamie Shetler and Steve Bonneau. Bonneau. Then with 35 seconds into the third period Steve Bonneau scored a nice goal on an assist from Scott Ransberry. After dropping into the consolation consolation round, Orono next met Uxbridge. Uxbridge. This was a sterling performance performance for the lads as they won the game 5-3. After pulling ahead 3-0 after two periods Orono had an inexplicable inexplicable lapse allowing Uxbridge to pull back to within 1 goal by the end of the second period. After that, however Orono cruised to victory. victory. Jamie Shetler scored the first 2 Orono goals unassisted. Tom . Wakefield scored the next goal as Orono rediscovered the point man, Jamie Shetler then scored on an assist from Steve Bonneau. On Sunday, December 11th Orono travelled to Millbrook and again played a strong defensive game. The first period was Orono's in that they had 5 or 6 good scoring opportunities, but couldn't capitalize on them. Millbrook had the second period getting 2 goals past Mike Hutton who made several saves that looked like sure goals but couldn't stop them all. Orono came on strong again in the third playing defensive as a team and getting more opportunités to score. Steven Wilson finally got Orono on the score sheet late in the third, unassisted.
