Harare with support from council called for a staff report on lighting of municipal intersections intersections with Taunton Road in the Town of Newcastle. She pointed out that all she was asking was a review and report on the matter. matter. Harare stated that Whitby carries out a program of lighting such intersections intersections and that she receives continued concern over the issue. A report is also to be received by council as to street lighting in Tyrone and especially at the intersection intersection of the 7th concession and Regional Road 14. Astounded I had thought of using the word 'surprised* to start these few paragraphs but it just didn't seem strong enough to represent feélings registered last Wednesday when I was dubbed into attending a meeting that wasn't a meeting but which totally caught me off-guard and astounded. I understand it all started following following an article under this column and under the title of 'Stark Naked' due to the loss of an old friend, a pair of binoculars. Certainly they had hung around for quiet awhile and played a big part in a personal past-time. We should not be surprised On what might or does happen in downtown Orono but we were totally unprepared for what was to take place. One of the best kept secrets as far as I was concerned. Business associates and other friends in the community had banded banded together to make sure your editor had at least a felling of being fully clothed and on this occasion at a buffet luncheon, at Mom's Kitchen, Kitchen, presented your writer with a new pair of binoculars. Betina went all out with the buffet buffet and the cake was decorated with a lake, duck, evergreen trees and a warbler, a car with binoculars on top and a somewhat nude trumpet player . . Gabriel, no doubt. So to speak of a surprise is just not enough. I have to say in a humble way that I was quite moved with the expression expression by all those who took part in the event and do express my appreciation appreciation and thanks. The binoculars are a great improvement improvement over the former pair with instant focusing and with greater power and light. They have already been put into use a couple of times. Thank you, thank you. Certainly over the years Orono has been good to us and we have en- joyed all those who make this community community an active commuriity in one way or another. A great place to live and a great people to be associated with. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 29, 1988-3 Hydro costs a concern in Courtice community Counc. Cowman referred to à meeting held in Courtice over the issue of hydro rates in the area which are somewhat above hydro rates in other urban areas. She said some 150 were in attendance attendance at the meeting when it was stated that Courtice hydro costs are some 25 percent higher than in the City of Oshawa. She said she did. not know the answer to the problem whether it was Courtice joining 1 Oshawa or a take aver of hydro services by the Newcastle system. Counc. Cowman said that a legislative committee was looking into such an issue which was not only only common to the Courtice area. She said the Town had better have a look into the issue. At this point Mayor Winters, who is a member oT the Newcastle Hydro Service, said "you better first set a budget for any study proposed. Larry Kbtseff, chief administrative administrative officer, said he would get a cost estimate for such a study. Ontario, • how do you like them apples! SMART SNACKING...
