Joe. • Published Every Wednesday . ti Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 29, 1988 Clarke Constituents call for environmental hearing On Tuesday, June -21st, five members of the Committee. of Clarke Constituents met with Ministry of Environment officials at their Toronto head office. The Committee of Clarke Constituents (CCC), accompanied by their legal counsel and Regional Councillor Diane Harare, presented a 'brief' to Mr. Gary Gallon (Policy Advisor to the Minister of Environment) and five, senior Ministry officials. Copies of the brief were also sent to the 1 Hon. Jim Bradley (Minister of the Environment) and the Hon. John Bakins (Minister of Municipal Affairs). At this meeting, the Committee Committee outlined the environmental concerns of their community regarding regarding the Laidlaw Landfill,site (also te site of a proposed Metro Interim Dump - N4), and the proposed Metro Interim Dump south of the 401 between Newcastle and Newtonville (south of Morgans Comers) - N3. Both sites are located in the former Township of Clarke. A series of pointed questions concerning concerning the Ministry's role in monitoring landfill sites was directed to the Ministry officials. The Committee was told that it would receive a writted response to these enquiries. Museum building 110th anniversary, Saturday The Clarke Township Museum and Archives celebrate Canada's Birthday and the 110th anniversary of the Kirby Museum building this Saturday, July 2. As part of the activities at the' Museum Sam Cureatz will be ■unveiling the New Millstone monument monument on the south lawn at the old Kirby School House, now the home of the museum. This outdoor exhibit is being dedicated to the ingenuity, courage and, perseverance of the early settlers settlers in the community. The dedication ceremony is held at 2:30 p.m. while the day is open from 1:00 p.m. until five p.m. Council members over-rule appeal process On Monday council members, in total, over-ruled a recommendation from staff that, the Town protect their interests by appealing a decision decision of the Land, .Division committee committee allowing land severance through an application by L. and E. Staff noted that they were not aware that Jhe Region would be objecting objecting and said it was prudent that the Town appeal the decision. It was noted by Counc. Cowman that the two properties had been melded after purchase in 1960 and 1965. Council .received and filed the recommendation from staff and as such staff will take no further action. action. + Tanker truck accident closest-off Highway 401 A' tanker truck carrying some 10,000 gallons o'f butane which was in accident, with a- smaller truck caused last Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. caused'401 highway to be closed-for a period of ten hours. The highway was closed from the Mill Street intersection at Newcastle Village to the Newtonville interchange. interchange. Police closed off both the east and west lanes of the highway due to the possibility ' of leakage of butane and a possible threat of an explosion. The accident happened in the east bound lane. Neither driver was injured in the accident. According to police none of the butane leaked onto the ground. Traffic was routed along Highway No. 2 between the two 1 centres until about L a.m. Friday morning when a further accident closed-off Highway 2 for a period of time. Traffics was then directed farther north. The Highway 2 route was closed for three hours following twp trucks attepting to pass in the hole- in-the-wall just east of Newcastle. The tanker truck was pumped out by the owner, Stephens Energy Ltd. of Mississauga and hauled away by a tow truck. The Newcastle Fire Department answered a call to the accident as did the Bowmanville ambulance and police officers from the Whitby and Cobourg detachments of the O.P.P. and officers from Durham Regional Police. HIGH.WINDS CAUSE HYDRO BLACK-OUT On Saturday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. hydro service service was disrupted for some residents in the Orono Estates and in an area north. High winds had knocked a tree over a hydro line resulting in the three hour power failure. O.P.P, RIDE PROGRAM IN AREA The O.P.P. Ride Program will be in the Newcastle area on July 3rd and July 7th.
