We sat outside on this beautiful morning, doing what we often did., enjoying the lovely country view to the north. The cows, the horses and the sunshine over on the Brown's hill. But - this time something was different, different, there was a horse down. We scampered for the old binoculars, hoping nothing was wrong. Within moments a half a dozen people gathered about the horse. Well, in less than fifteen minutes, right before our eyes, it happened, the birth of a colt. With a slight tug on his spindly hind legs, there he was - and he was gorgeous. Soon mother was up, nurturing her newborn. Within the hour, the young colt shakily rose to his feet, looking somewhat like Bambi. A precious, beautiful scene. (Wish 1 could have bottled the moment, then later on, take it to the city to share with the many, many kids that will likely never see such a dear sight..) We had the very distinct pleasure of meeting and chatting with the happy couple, Ross and Ina Brown the other day.. Yes, everything was perfect, and checked out• marvelously with the vet. Mare Shipka Tyme "Ty" and sire "Striking "Striking Sun" are the parents, and very well. Congratulations to long time Newtonville residents, Ross and Ina Brown on their latest young lad. Additional congratulations this day to Ina on her recent induction with special tributes from the Northumberland/Newcastle Northumberland/Newcastle Board of Education into the Twenty-Five Year club. Ina has been a school teacher for twenty-nine years, of which'twenty-five have been with thç Northumberland/Newcastle Board. She teaches at Orono Public School. Ross and Ina attended the annual 25 Year Banquet held at the Lions Club in Cobqurg where all members are honoured each year., those who have been with our Board this length of time, or who are retiring, or both. As we know, during this past Environment Environment Week, ending June 5th, many commendable educational and dean up activities were on the go, organized by the "Citizens for a Safe Environment.." Without exception, exception, the preschoolers at Newtonville's Play Place were learning learning the knack of picking up garbage garbage and putting it in its place.. Moms and tots of Newtonville's Play Place, along with Orono's group had a super day trip out to the Exotic Cat World in Orono, last Wednesday. The trip was grand. Moms sent many thanks to the peo ple out at Cat World for their generous group admission reduction, reduction, and all enjoyed the day immensely immensely in this terrific, "Spic 'n Span" place for kids. Play Place has closed for the summer months, but welcomes all new moms and their young children to join in the Wednesday morning gatherings in September. I was speaking with a young man I know who h^s taken drags steadily steadily for sixteen years. He has taken, I would say, just about every drug, in every way possible. Now he is going through a different kind of hell. He is trying to get clean, to stop taking drugs. 1 His dream to eventually help other kids who get hooked, be able to get through to them of the real depths of the damage they do to the body and brain. This person looks many years older than he is. Sometimes he speaks intelligently; another time with tones of violence, then his words become sad, depressed and suicidal. ' Drugs do not have boundaries. They do not limit themselves to any age group, social or financial standing, standing, race or colour, or to a particular particular type of neighbourhood. We must not think drug usage or addiction could never happen to someone someone we know or love. No media outlet can say too much against the use of drugs. The matter is Life and Death. The staff have been organizing the events and the competitors were selected on June * 10. Grade 5's went to the C.N. Tower on June 2. Everyone loved the Tour of the Universe. Grades 4/5's went to the Lang Pioneer Village on June 6. The end of school is coming, The Pines' Band On Wednesday, May 25th, The Pines Senior Public School Band' performed at Orono Public School in the morning and at Kirby Public School in the afternoon. This trip enabled the students to play Tor their former teachers and they had a lot of fun too! This trip was the Band's last performance this year. According to Mrs. Prole, this year's Band was a hard working group who performed very well. She hopes they continue in the High Schools' bands. We would like to thank Kirby Burgers for their excellent excellent service during that day when the band visited for lunch. The Halco Homes Trip On Thursday, May 26th, a group of students from The Pines, visited the Halco Homes Development area which is in Courtice, just off the 401. This trip was an enrichment enrichment activity to follow up our visit on the Futures trip to Toronto. When the group arrived, the coowner coowner took us on a tour where we saw houses being designed through a computerized system. After the design is completed, this program drafts the walls, roof trusses, and the floor trusses. The group then watched a house being pre-built on the site. In the words of Mr. Farrington, Farrington, Halco Homes "...is a fascinating place," and he also says it is, "hi-tech." We would like to thank Mme Brunt for organizing this trip, as 1 well as Mr. Pitt, Mr. Scott. Mr. Sprayson and Mr. Farrington, who accompanied the students on the trip. Air Band Contest On Tuesday, May 31st, all classes competed against each other in an Air Band Contest. Along with Mr. Prole, Mr. Smith chose two teams of six boys and six girls. The tournament will be on Thursday, 4 June 2nd at M.J. Hobbs and at the Bowmanville Memorial Park.
