It was disappointing to see that few adults showed up for this fitting occasion. The walk was Orono's participation in Participac : tion Day, Even with the help of the young and spirited boys and girls of Orono Public School the circle was not completed. If it wasn't for the youngsters, teachers and some of the downtown Focus on the budgets... maintenance and special building projects With about $110 million worth of buildings in the Northumberland and Newcastle system, Superintendent Superintendent of Business Ron Sudds says there has been a new emphasis in the budget "over the last two to three years on maintenance, especially preventive maintenance." The 1988 base budget (excluding special projects) has increased by 4.5 percent. That will mean new roofing for eight school, and repalcement of outdated outdated P. A. systems in six schools. The base budget also includes paving paving or site improvement projects at Courtice Secondary School, Camborne Camborne Public School, Stockdale Public School, Hillcrest Public School, The Pines Senior Public School and Clarke High School. Special projects include a number of physical improvements to existing existing schools to provide a better educational setting. For example, at Cobourg District Collegiate Institute Institute West, where a large number of students take music, the Board will spend $10,000 to create three small practice rooms, replacing the existing music room and classroom. With the new rooms, teachers will be able to wrok with smaller groups and teach simultaneously. The rooms will encourage peer group learning and permit sectional rehearsals for the school band. At Lord Elgin Public School in Bowmanville, new washroom facilities will be added to the special education classroom. For Brighton Public School, the new mones will mean a larger Junior Kindergarten classroom and more adnfinistrative space. Ron. Miller, General Supervisor of Plant, says "ouf proposals met with budget support, and I'm extremely extremely pleased. merchants, Participaction Day would have been meaningless here in Orono (unfortunate but true). It was quite an émotion to see this generation of young adults (they have earned the title) Stretching their little arms out to one another until there was no stretch left. To think if only a few (under statement) statement) residents of Orono had ' waken up this morning with a tad- bit more ambition, jyst think what might have been accomplished. Heh! Folks it was only a measly 15 minutes out of your day, out of your life time. It couldn't have hurt for some of you to get off your....well behinds and join in last weeks short affair. If the truth be known 9 out of 10 of you probably needed the extra exercise. Not saying saying that walking aroiind the block is too strenuous especially when its only for 15 minutes. 1 apologize for this article to all of those who would have attended last Wednesday but had a favourable excuse. by Katrina Johnston TER-RICK CONTRACTING REPLACEMENT WINDOWS and DOORS SOLID VINYL SIDING ORONO 983-5724 MOBILE 434-0493 AUTO CENTRE ORONO MILL STREET NORTH USED CAR SALES , Radiators - Air Conditioner - Mufflers - Brakes - Body work Tune-Up'Electronic Ignition - Fuel Injection Systems Propane Conversion and Inspection - Rebuilt Engines & I ' Cylinder Heads Safety Inspection Station - Guaranteed Service • , Lie.
