F-oiti Around the Region Region of Durham gets $277,239 for water works The Regional Municipality of Durham has received $277,239 as first payment for a wafer works project, Environment Minister Jim Bradley announced today. The project includes construction of a water supply system to service the Courtice urban area in the Town of Newcastle. The money is part of a grant estimated at $1,180,000, which is a provincial contribution toward the total cost of the project, estimated at $2,185,000. Lifèstyle Day at Clarke Many exhibits dealing with "maintaining a healthy lifestyle" made up this years Lifestyle Day at Clarke High School. Students from both Clarke and the Pines were invited invited to wander throughout the gym, where the exhibits were displayed. Crime Stoppers helps to capture teen vandals at Mosport Tips to Crime Stoppers recently helped Durham Regional Police to arrest and charge three Bowman- ville youths for extensive vandalism done to Mosport Park. The 18-year-olds charged with seven counts of mischief are Jeffrey Lee Kane of R.R.6 Bowmanville, Kyle Roy Allin and James Thomas MçFarlaneof R.R. 3, Bowmanville. The trio committed over $70,000 damage to a restaurant and to race cars owned by General Motors and used by the Powell Motorsport Advanced Advanced Driving School. GM Worker waits for news concerning retirement Paul Morin is a 65 year old GM worker which means that he has reached the age of retirement according according to GM and the Canadian Auto Workers. Paul has ho plans for retirement though, he would like to keep' right on working and so Paul and the CAW Union have taken the case to the Ontario Labour Relations Relations Board. They are now awaiting a written decision as to whether or not Paul can keep on working. Oshawa Auto Auction taken over by U.S. Company The Oshawa Auto Auction was recently purchased by Manheim's Auto Auction's. One of the conditions conditions of the deal was that all dealers who had lost money be paid back in full, including interest. Region charging $50 a tonne for garage dumping The Region of Durham have informed informed the Town of Newcastle that as of May 1st charges for waste disposal facilities under the jurisdiction of the Region are to increase. The charge per tonne has been set at $50.00. A graduated scale from 100 kg to 250 kg has been set at $8.50 increasing to $15.00 for 251 kg to 350 kg and so one to the tonne i a $50.00 Support use of biodegradable bags The Region of Durham has approved approved a proposal to use biodegradable garbage bags are requesting tnat tne municipalities within the Region so encourage their residents. The Region has also requested that the Province of Ontario introduce introduce legislation requiring biodebradable packaging throughout the province. To compete in national competition Selina Ahmed, 13 Of Burnham Public School, Cobourg and Andrew Andrew Hately of Bowmanville Senior Public School are both to compete in the National Science Fair competition competition after having won in the recent recent regional competition in Cobourg. Fennell not to seek re-election Scott Fennell who has served in the House of Commons for the past nine years and represented Ontario riding has stated that he will not seek re-election in the next election which could be held this September. Fennell states he will return to the insurance business at the end of his .term with the Conservative government government for which he has been the par-, ty whip. Urban Oshatva taxpayers will fork out $21.59 more The urban Oshawa taxpayer will shell out an additional $21.59 to the City of Oshawa this year over that of last year. The total average city tax will amount to $469.29. Ganaraska committee first meet April 27th. ' . The ' Ganaraska- Region. Conservation Conservation Authority has established a ' 12-n)ember user committee who will study and report as to the use of the Ganaraska Forest. Over the past year many complaints complaints have been received as to the use of the forest, 4,400 hectare, by motorcycles and other motorized vehicles. The Authority has established the committee with representation, from such as motorcyclists, skiers, snowmobilers, hikers, trail riders, hunters and naturalists. Feds to purchase contaminated ravine It has been announced that the federal government has an "agreement "agreement to purchase" 15-hectares of Rollins Ravive in Port Hope which has some of the heaviest contaminated contaminated waste in Port Hope. A number of options are to be considered with council as to what is to be undertaken. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 27, 1988-5 Fire losses up $.5 million The Newcastle Fire dpeartment has submitted its annual report to council in which the department recognizes a total fire loss for the year amounting to $1.221 million an increase of $512,655 over 1987. The department reported to 650 emergency calls during the year which included 107 false alarms, 155 dwelling fires and 166 grass and rubbish fires. The Bowmanville station had a slight reduction in call's during the year answering 349 calls. The Orono station answered 59 calls in 1987 compared to 53 in 1986. Newcastle Village station answered 11 calls while Courtice answered 131 calls. The department carried out 1165 fire inspections throughout the Town in the year. In May of 1987 a deputy fire chief was added to the department compriment being Michael Creighton. Also during the year two new fire pumps were added to equipment. The report points out that the department was able to add two full-time firefighters during the year and now hgve an additional 20 part- time firefighters of which five have been added to each of the four stations. stations.
