Viewer's Choice opens in downtown Orono Downtown presents Mother's Day contest in recognition of the Mothers' Day celebration on Sunday, May 8th the Orono Downtown Business Association is sponsoring a contest draw with three prizes of $150.00, $50.00 and $25.00 in D.B.I.A. Bucks. Customers to downtown Orono when making a purchase at any of the downtown stores will receive one of six letters which in total spell out "Mother". When a customer has accumulated all six letters to spell out Mother ft makes a set and are returned to one of the stores in the downtown along with name and phone number. This completed set with name is then enter in a draw which will be held, on Saturday afternoon, May 7th. One can enter as often as they have a completed set of letters as long as they are returned with name and phone number. The letters are available to-day, Wednesday, and will be available until Saturday afternoon of May 7th. David Scott, chairman of the Committee of Clarke Constituents, who have organized opposition to the expansion of the Laidlaw landfill landfill site in the Town spoke to council on Monday night. Scott- 'thanked all who- opposed the Laidlaw expansion plans and stated that the committee was well aware of the garbage corisis and the need for landfill sites. He said any landfill site must be environmentally safe as determined by an Environment Assessment. The AECB is expected to vote on the latest Eldorado proposal following a meeting Wednesday evening (tonight) at the Flying Dutchman. Dutchman. The AECB will be entertaining entertaining local input. Local activists opposing the use of the Port Granby dump site by Eldorado are somewhat cautious of the proposal and possible closing but hopeful that such comes to pass. The Crown company has been burying different radioactive waste at Port Granby since the 1950s. New methods of. operations however has reduced the volume of waste at the plant by eighty percent ■ over the past five years. In order to prepare for the dosing dosing of the dump Eldorado is asking the AECB for a two month exten- tion on its dumping licence at the Port Granby site. Oliver said the company will need the two months to preapre the Port Hope plant for temporary storage of the waste. The waste may stay stored at the plant for a few months to years, until until such time as Eldorado could install install a new recycling technology. Until a new site is found the Port Granby dump will remain with monitoring by Eldorado resources Ltd. It has been reported that AECB spokesman Hugh Spence has stated that it isn't likely that the federal regulatory body would reject the plans to close out the use of the Port Granby dump. "Should there he an increase in the hazard to workers at the*refinery, the hoard may say no, but that's not very likely", states Spence. Oliver of Eldorado said, if the proposal is turned aside then the company has no alternative hut to go back to their long-term storage plan at Port Granby. A recent news release made public at the 75th Anniversary banquet banquet of Memorial Hospital by the Ministry of Health confirming the approval of a $8.2 million grant towards planned' construction and renovations has given the green light to the proposals.' The contractor^ CANA Construction Construction Company of Woodbridge have moved onto the site following the final signing of documents on Monday of this week. The cost of the contract is some $13.2 ipillion and is expected to take 28 months to complete the contract. The total cost involved for the new construction, renovations and equipment has been estimated at $15.8 million. Through the generous support of local contributors an amount of $2.75 million was raised for the proposal. proposal.
