8-OroriO Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 23, 1988 Letter to editor Shortest Speech on Record A public meeting in the Orono Town Hall held in February expressed expressed dismay at the prospect of the Clarke Public Library in Orono being closed in January 1989. This meeting by resolution requested that a delegation approach the Library Board and make its common common concerns known. On March 16, this delegation ap- àpproaçhed the Library Board with a fair, and reasonable presentation. The Chairman asked the Board members if there were' any questions. questions. The first question was directed to Mr. Forrester and myself. The question: "Why in five years this member of the Board had not been able get the history of Orono Library from either of the named gentlemen?" The answer: "Madam Chairman 1 wish to.." The Chairman: "You are out of order." (Shortest speech I ever made.") Now 1 wish to finish my answer to the question. "I have never with held any historical information from this gentleman or front any other member of our community!" Quite otherwise, I am proud of the history, of all aspects of this community community and will promote it on any occasion. 1 came away from this meeting with the Library Board disappointed disappointed and indeed saddened at the autocratic position adopted by this Board. It is my firm belief that this oroblem or any other problem in a society can only be resolved by cool, reasoned discussion. That is the way the public interest is best served. Indeed in our Parliamentary system, decisions are only taken after rational debate and fair exchange exchange in Question and Answer sessions. sessions. Without this, we would not be living in a democratic country. Serious as losing our library would be to the community, any threat to the democratic process is even more disturbing! S. B. Rutherford Letter to editor The Emperor Has No Clothes This is the story of democracy in progress Gestapo style. We all recall the story of the sovereign who paraded nude under the self- inflicted misapprehension that he was clothed. He was nuded and deluded, probably psychotic, and most certainly suffering from sever sociopathic disease (he really hated people)! To bring the story up to March 1988, picture a delegation of concerned concerned Oronoites and Newcastleites, being invited to make a presentation to our Newcasi- tie Library Board, approaching this August committee at 8:30 p.m. on the night of March 16, 1988 in the basement of the Bowmanville library. Mrs. Sproatt welcomed us, and Ann Dreslinski gave her presentation, presentation, She spoke well of the consultant's consultant's report, pointing out only one glaring arithmetical error, spoke of the concern felt for our older and much younger citizens regarding the lack of transportation were our library location changed, and closed closed with a request to the board to reconsider its decision to close the Orono facility. Mrs. Sproatt thanked Mrs. D. and asked if any board members would like to question her. Emperor William asked why no one was at any of the preliminary meetings prior to the report. Mrs. D. suggested that none of the meetings was held in Ward 111. "Not necessary to hold it in Ward 111", said Sir William. This man is labouring under the illusion that he is clothed in factual security, 1 safe in the arms of democracy, fascist style. Next question question put to Mrs. D. by His Eminence, "Why was I never able to get a history of the Clarke Library building when I asked Mr, Rutherford and others?" Mr. Rutherford, clearly out of order in this programmed environment, environment, attemped to respond to his name. He was unsuccessful. The Board moved to accept our presentation, and to give it some further thought. Clearly. - this man is not a LIBRARY LOVER, or else he'd be aware of the material on the Clarke building, available through any of our libraries. It would see that he is clothed only only in fear, the fear of not being in control, of having to listen to reason, and of dealing with the thinking adult peopÿ of this town who know a naked emperor when wc see one.
