Adding icing on the cake..the actors actors requested audience support and participation. Kids were tickled to contribute..after all they are sound- effects specialists! Trains, cars, horses, dogs even the wind and more filled the gym. The performance came to an end reluctantly. Then Stephen and Jonathan asked for two volunteers to play a scene with each of them. There was no shortage of hands. Two students from Newcastle Public School delighted one and all with their enthusiasm and ingenuity. ingenuity. Finally, bowing to thundering applause, Mr. Desjardins and Mr. Wing bid farewell, thanking everyone for inviting them to Newtonville. Talking with Stephen afterwards, he said they have been taking their performances all over and are enjoying enjoying it immensely. Drama, acting, theatre - passions of Stephen's and Jonathan's since High School. Thank you gentlemen. The pleasure was ours! "Green Day" was held at the school Friday, March 1 lih. Students dressed in various garbs of green, brought along amazing varieties of green food (?) to share with classmates. Through the halls could be heard tunes of : I wore green loi the Irish I wore green for the Irish I wore green for the Irish On St. Patrick's Day! by: Peggv Mullan My fither and mither are Irish My fither and mither are Irish My fither and mither are Irish And I am Irish too! They kept a pig in the parlour They kept a pig in the parlour They kept a pig in the parlour And he was Irish too! Blarney! March 17th approaches and we all know someone with smilin' Irish eyes. Our "Pops" was born in 1907 as Spring broke through on the Shankel Road in Belfast, Ireland. Many-a-tale was to be told, of hard work, hard times and family. The twinkle in his eye was definite. His grip strong. His hug warm and sweet and his heart as big as an Irish meadow. This is our treasure. This is our good fortune fortune - to remember and to cherish. May the luck of the shamrock, may the joy of the Irish bring you, your very own treasure. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Little Scoops... -"Brevity is the soul of Wit.." So, what did you think of the school report cards? Bet if the Board of Education put the vote to parents, we would go back to the straight - forward simplicity of A's, B's and C's. -It was rather scary, don't you think? 250,000 people descending on Toronto Airport heading south of the border for this March break. Hope all's well. -Some optimism! Just four more calendar days until spring officially arrives; I did see my first robin, a whole bunch of black birds and grosbeaks; even four geese flying overhead. BUT - alas, those so- called February blahs have stretched stretched over now well into March, taking over many-a-cheery disposition and turning them into downright gloom. Seems like ages ago that the grass was soft and green, the sun warm, and roads dry and the floor by the back door stayed clean for more than fifteen minutes! (I wonder if I'm too old to pout?!) -Get our your Easter Bonnet soon! Festivities, lillies, bunnies and eggs all are on their way - really and truly! truly! i Now or Never Theatre Troupe looking for actors ,The Now or Never^ Theatre Troupe is'looking for talent; actors, singers, musicians, or behind the scenes» personnel, interested in amateur theatre. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 16, 1988-5 "New" Not necessarily 'Better'-never surrender by Katrina Hey, what's the big idea closing down the Orono Library. You'd think that common sense would tell the Newcastle Library Board and members of council that the community community would never allow such a thing. We have been told that by the closing of the Orono Library new store front libraries will emerge. Who cares! If it's not what the community wants then why risk starting World War 111. By the closing of the library $20,000 is supposedly going to be saved. But, it just so happens that the opposition is however, willing to fork over $3.4 million for the new facilities. Go figure! There's something about the smell of a new store front library i that really turns my stomach, ! Nothing can replace the warm, comfortable atmosphere which the Orono Library possesses. The peo ple here are friendly and willing to help a fellow member of the human race, but go into one of those store front libraries and check out the atmosphere atmosphere there. Not too pleasant is it? Feel. as though you're being spied on, right? Well, for the most part you probably probably are being watched. It's like a angry hawk over protecting her nest. The employees follow you around waiting for you to abuse or assault one of their precious book's. So* you try to make the best use of your little follower. You ask a few questions - get a few answers and that's it. There's no friendly "Hello" or "How are you today", nothing: It sure does not stand up to the warm greeting of the Orono Library. However, it seems a waste for the upstairs room being put to no use. Maybe if the services of the Orono Library were expandéd then perhaps the library would see a better better future. The upstairs could be us- Classified Advertsiement COMING EVENTS CANADA FOR CHRIST Crusade. Crusade. There's a way which seems right to people but the end result is death, Proverbs 14:12. To round this all up I'd like to say, "Leave the Orono Library alone." It doesn't hurt to keep around the old - not everything the government does is profitable, so why not keep a sure thing. sggy ^ ftiflwH The availability of quality, affordable, and flexible child care is a key to opening up the future for many women in Canada. , The Government of , - Canada has recognized the importance of accessible child care in assuring women's economic economic equality by introducing The National Child Care Strategy-a balanced mix of , program initiatives, offering a wide rknge of choices to women who work inside or outside the horhe. ■ .
