4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February JO, 1988 SPORTS Orono Kinsmen PeeWees active on the ice pad Last minute spoils Orono Tyke shut-out The Orono T ykes started this busy week with à 8®tne on Saturday against a select t~ am °t 6 year olds On Sunday, Orono then travelled east for a tournament in Grafton, Although it was a miserable day as (intended for Febuary 3, 1988) t he Orono Kinsmen Peewees had a full evening on Friday, January 29th as they played in two exhibition exhibition games. The first contest, at 5:15, was a rematch against the Oshawa Harmony team that had knocked Orono out of the Little Britain tournament. The teams seemed to take up play right where they left off as the puck went end- to-end with good chances at both goals. Orono started the scoring at the 7:45 mark as Cameron Tomkins got hold of the puck on the sideboards sideboards and passed to Stephen Shetler in the corner. Stephen relayed to Jason Mercer in front of the net and Jason fired over the sliding goalie for the opener. The Oshawa team responded with their own goal just 34 seconds later and added two more before the first period ended. The second period had lots of action as the Orono boys carried the play to Oshawa for most of the tim'e but couldn't get by the goalie. Oshawa added another goal at the 1:28 mark but Orono came back with one of their own just one minuta later. Oshawa won the face- off deep in their end and tried to clear the puck out. of the zone. Sean McKenzie blocked the puck and rifled a shot at the Oshawa net and Stephen Shetler was able to get his stick on the puck to deflect it past the Oshawa goalie. Oshawa stormed stormed back from this and managed to get the puck into the Orono net just as the buzzer sounded to end the period. Orono played very well in the third period, keeping the play in the Oshawa end for a good portion of the time, but were unable to get any goals to close the score.. A penalty shot was called at the end of the game against Oshawa and the resulting shot bounced over the Oshawa goalie but he was able to reach back and glove the puck out of the air before it crossed the line to stop Orono on their last chance. Scott Hall and Chad Puk played well in net, keeping Oshawa from adding to their lead on several good shots. Scott Hart wig, John But- tigieg and Greg Hooper did a fine job on defense, .while Scott Hentig, Brandon Ovenden, Jason Hansen, , Adam Wallace and Mike Schoep, as forwards, put lots of pressure on the Oshawa team. The final score of this game, Oshawa 5 and Orono 2, doesn't reflect the actual game, which was much closer. Later that evening, at 8:15, Orono played host to a team from Port Perry. The local boys were smarting from the earlier loss to Oshawa and took it out on Port Perry. At 5:52, Orono opened the scoring when Mike Sçhoep stole the puck and got it to Stephen Shetler who drop-passed to the point for Sean McKenzie. Sean's high shot from the blue line beat the goalie for the game opener. At 3:39, Brandon Brandon Ovenden got the puck in the Orono's end and passed to Scott Hentig. Scott spotted Jason Hansen breaking out and fed him a pass at centre ice. Jason carried the puck into the Port Perry corner and fired a low shot that caught the far corner. corner. At 1:34, Orono added another as Adam Wallace got the puck behind the Port Perry net and passed passed to the slot where Stephen Shetler fired a quick shot to end the first period scoring. The second period saw lots of action but only one goal. At 5:24, Stephen Shetler got free in Iront of the goal and slid the puck into the net past the goalie's stick. The third period was a wide-open end-to-end contest with 9 goals scored. Orono got the first at 8:29 when John Buttigieg passed go Greg Hooper and he relayed it to Jason Hansen. Jason shot through a screen of players and found the open corner of the net. Port Perry finally broke the shutout with two goals of their own before Orono got their 6th. At 5:37, Jason Hansen fired the puck into the corner for Scott Hentig and he quickly passed to Brandon Ovenden in the slot to start Brandon's goalscoring clinic. After Port Perry got two more quick goals, Brandon scored again as he passed from behind the net to Jason Hansen in the slot, then got in front for the return pass and stuffed stuffed the puck under the falling goalie. Scott Hentig set up Jason Hansen in, the corner with a pass and Jason relayed to the slot where Brandon Ovenden finished his hat- trick at 2:38. Greg Hooper finished off the scoring at the 1:37 mark with assists going to Stephen Shetler and- Jason Mercer. Chad Puk and Scott hall in net played their usual fine game, robbing, the opposition when called on. Although not on the score sheet, both Scott Hartwig on defense and Cameron Tomkins on forward, gave fine efforts and deserved proper notice. Final score Orono 3 and Port Perry 4. Get back to good team play, boys, playoffs are near! On Friday, February 5th, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees played a return match with the Bowmanvifle Dykstra's Deli team which defeated the local boys earlier in the year. With three of the Orono team members unable to attend, the game promised to be hard-skating event. The first period saw lots of chances at both ends but it was Orono that scored the only goal. At 3:54, Greg Hooper got the puck at the side of the Bowmanville net and passed to the front where Mike Schoep lifted a high backhand to the top corner of the net. This stood as the only goal until the 2:54 mark of- (he second period when Bowmanville scored to tie the game. Orono went ahead again at the 8:37 mark of the third period when Brandon Ovenden outraced a Bowmanville defender to the puck in the corner and centred a pass to Jason Hensen whf> beat the goalie with a quick flip shot. Bowmanville tied the game again at the 6:40 mark - but Orono took the lead again with 3:33 left in the game. On this play, a shot from Scott Hartwig on the blue line wound up in the crease where Greg Hooper managed to get enough of the puck to deflect it into the net before the goalie could smother it.' Hectic action followed as Bowmanville tried to come back * again but Orono got their insurance goal at 2:31 when'Scott Hartwig fired a shot from the point and Mike Schoep got his stick on the puck to deflect it as the goalie slid to block the original shot. From this point on the tempo of the game, already very high, got even higher. Fine defensive play by John Buttigieg, Buttigieg, Adam Wallace and Sean McKenzie in clearing the Orono zone and feeding the forwards was backed up by Chad Puk and Scott Hall wi(h their special goaltending to keep Bowmanville from scoring a tremendous game, working as a team they came out on top 5 - 2, There was a lot of passing this game as well as team checking. If an Oshawa player got by one Orono player another soon was in his way. This allowed Kevin Copping to have a shut-out going until 13:28 of the third period. Orono on the other hand got but to a good start by using passing as a means of getting getting into the Oshawa end. Adam VanDam opened the scoring halfway through the first period with assists to Murphy Irvine and Jeremy Pare. Adam scored the second second goal with 5:00 left in the second second period, with assists going to David Harman and Steve Gates. Orono went up by three goals 1:00 later with Steven Gates getting his first goal from Andrew Reid and Mike Hutton Jr. Adam VanDam then got the hat-trick : 15 into the third by his usual fast skating and heads up play. Oshawa got their two goals and then Kyle Beacock got Orono's first penalty of the year. While he was off Amy McAllister got the last goal from Steven Foster and Adam VanDam. Great team work guys! other goals. Meanwhile, the forwards forwards mentioned along with Cameron Tomkins and Scott Hentig, Hentig, took the play to the opposition at every opportunity. The final score was Orono 4 and Bowmanville Bowmanville 2. Very good individual and team efforts gave the local boys a deserved win. Keep it up, boys, the first playoff game is on Sunday night in Bobcaygeon. All team members sènd their best wishes to Dan Walters for a speedy recovery and return to action. (Late update - bad weather forced re-scheduling of Sunday's game in Bobcaygeon to March 4th). far as weather is concerned everything else was great! In the first game Orono played Warkworth. Adam VanDam put on a good show scoring the first 5 goals of the game as well as getting 1 assist later. Steven Foster had his first 2 goal game and Andrew Reid had 1 goal. Then with 1:35 left in the third period Warkworth got their lone goal spoiling Kevin Copp- ings shut-out. This was ' a well played game from the Orono kids with more good team work. Passing is very important and with 7 different different players getting assists it shows Orono is passing the pur 1 - alot. The assists go to Steven Ga( (3), Andrew Reid (2), Murphy Irvine Irvine (2), Amy ,\McAllister (2), Jerémy Pate (2), Mike Hutton Jr. (2) and one for Adam. David Harman Harman had One of his best games doing doing some fine checking, good passing passing and skating strongly. Kyle Beacock also had a good game by being very fist y and showing you don't have; to be big to go against the boards and dig the puck free against sometimes 2 and 3 opponents. opponents. Great game kids! Keep up the strong team work. In the next game Orono came up against 1 the same Oshawa select team they played on Saturday.
