4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 3, 1988 SPORTS Tyke hockey provides opportunity to learn One of the best things about Tyke hockey is all the players get the opportunity to play different positions and learn which may be best suited for them in upcoming seasons. For example on Saturday, January 30th Adam VanDam played net for the second time this year and got a well deserved shutout. shutout. Amy McAllister who usually plays left-wing played centre and had a spectacular game scoring two of the three Orono goals. The first goal came on the opening face off. Amy won this face off pushing the puck forward stepping around her opposing centre and with great speed and puck handling ability split the defense at .the blue line then skated straight for the net and fired the puck from ten feet out into the lower right hand corner. This all lasted just 10 seconds and gave Orono a great lift in spirits which lasted all game. Orono kept pressure on the Oshawa goalie for •most of the game with our defense rally letting the Oshawa players get close to Adam. The second Orono goal was provided by Steven Foster his first of what we hope will be many of the year. Steven's goals were assisted by Kyle Beacock and Murphy Irvine with 1:39 left in the first period. Then halfway through the second period Amy got her second second of the game with assists going to Mike Hutton Jr. and Jeremy Pare. The coaches are very pleased with the play of all the kids. There was lots of passing of the puck and shooting for the corners of the net something they practiced lately. The Tykes have two games plus a tournament in Grafton this coming week and we hope they have continual continual success but mostly that they have fun. Lots of fun! Tennant Fuelers enter annual playoff series Well it's playoff time! Our guys travelled to Millbrook for game 1, January 17th. Coach Vey realigned the offense to combat the stronger host team. Orono played their hearts out, but the final buzzer signalled a 3 -1 loss. It was a fine effort effort as Millbrook is heavily favoured to win the Championship. Millbrook visited Orono January 19th to complete their 2 game playoff set. Once again Orono put forth a valiant effort and skated with Millbrook most of the game. But the visitors prevailed handing Orono a 4 to 1 loss. Clayton Rendell along with Chad Maartense have to be commended for their goaltending heroics in a losing cause. Orono was easily outshot 2 to 1 in both contests. Left winger ; Jamie Shetler scored both goals for Orono in the 2 losses to Millbrook. January 21st Orono travelled to Peterborough for a weekend tournament. tournament. Game 1 was against Norwood. Norwood. Both teams were evenly matched matched as indicated by a final tie score of 4 to 4. Game 2, January 22nd saw Orono go up against their old Nemesis Millbrook again!! Millbrook seems to have Orono's "Number" this year as they defeated them 6 to 1. Orono played their 3rd and final gàme of the tournament tournament January 23rd against Peter- boro's All Saints team, losing 2 to 0. January 26th saw "cross town rivals', Newcastle visit Orono for their first playoff encounter of the season. Orono couldn't muster any offense at all and went down to a 2 to 0 defeat. January 30th saw an Oshawa 'Canadiens' entry visit Orono for an exhibition game. Our guys were really 'smarting' from dropping 3 playoff games in a row and they were hungry for goals!! With a depleted bench, coach Vey went with 2 lines. It almost paid off as Orono got the goal production, but were out-scored 6 to 5 by the visitors!! Scoring for Orono was Daryl Reid - 2 goals, 2 assists; Jeff Hughes - 2 goals, 1 assist; Jamie Shetler - 1 goal, 2 assists; Aaron Staples - 2 assists and Jason Lawrence - 1 assist. Mike Landers, Brian Haines and Owen Taylor .pressed constantly for Orono's 2nd line combination. Defensive pairing of Scott Ransberry and Jeff Good- m'urphy proved a 'troublesomè' pair for the Canadien's forwards. Chad Maartense stopped a lot of 'rubber' between the pipes for Orono. Absent were Clayton Rendell, David Crozier, Paul Woods and Marc David. . Next gan;ie is* February 2nd in Orono.
