Onen secretary's office at'Senior's Lodge On Monday the Durham County Senior's Lodge in Oronq celebrated the opening of a new office in the basement of the recreation complex at the centre. Members of the complex complex as well as visitors from the community enjoyed the official opening of the office as well as the serving of a light lunch. . On this occasion a new secretary was introduced, Marjorie Caswell who is taking over these duties from Lawrence Staples who has served as secretary since the opening of the 41 -unit Senior Lodge in 1978. Lawrence has been associated with the organization for the past 25 years. Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 3, 1988 Educators and trustees react to minister's words A group of six principals through . a news conference and as well as comments from the most recent meeting of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education have defended the local educational system against criticism leveled by recent comment, province-wide, by the Minister of Education, Chris Ward. In the first instance the principals called a news conference in Brighton to put the minds of parents at ease following the minister's remarks. Don Dawson, principal at the Brighton Secondary School, formerly principal at Clarke, said he wanted to assure all that the local public school system was indeed doing doing an excellent job of educating the area's young people. He said they realized that in the real world of education, problems do exist, but that this also happens in any organization. Dawson said they did not feel that Ward's statements regarding the Ontario educational system ap ply with equal weight to the public school systems serving the local communities. Dawson said there has been no flood of calls from area parents. He called Ward's low evaluation of the literacy level in schools a "simplistic description of the issue which was neither logical or accurate. accurate. He said degree of illiteracy has existed for.years. It. was stated that it vps felt that the -system was enjoying more success success than ever before in the educational educational history of the province in developihg literacy and enumeracy skills of the students. "Our graduates are not shabby products", added Dawson, "They read and write better than ever before". Charles Clarke, Campbellford principal, said t-he tcîp students of today could run circles around the top three percent of graduates in 1945. Don Dawson said parents could rest well assured that the streaming of students into courses at the basic, Orono Downtown holds annual meeting The Orono Downtown Business Improvement Association held their annual meeting last Wednesday at Mom's Kitchen with thirteen downtown businesses represented. Following the financial report which was on line with budget and a brief review of activities for the year 1987 the annual election of officers was held. Returning to office were: Roy Forrester, chainpan, Betina Mad- dock, vice-chairman,.Ann Dreslin- ski, secretary-treasurer and Directors Directors Sue Sawyer, Clary Vreeker, Lynn Finlay, Wendy Partner, Murray Murray Taylor and Maureen Mumford. It was a decision of the annual ' meeting that monthly meetings should again be undertaken in order that all members were well aware of the undertakings of the association. Kim Cowan heads up a committee committee of Lynn Finlay and Mary Clap- dorp to schedule events for the year, in promotions. The first promotion for 1988 is one for Valentine's Day which gets underway this Saturday, February. 6th and runs through to February 13th. Each business is to have a guessing guessing contest for Hearts with each store running their own contest. The person providing the closest number of hearts in the container will be the winner. Further a Name This Tune contest contest is also being held in which each store take* the name of a tune and provides a display with a theme relating to the title of the tune. The person with the most correct answers will receive a DB1A Buck prize of $25.00 with a second, $15.00 and third, $10.00 prize. Betina Maddock reported on publicity proposals which will come before the Association later in the year. A budget of $6500.00 was set the association for 1988. Robinson and Lynne Lowery- Robinson on 11.79 hectares of land at the north end of Main Street was referred back, to the Planning Department on Monday. The application application is to allow eight residential lots in the area fronting on Main Street which, would be serviced serviced by individual private wells and septic systems. _ » According to a planning» depart ment report it- is stated that under the present zoning no buildings or structure may be erected unless the lot is serviced by municipal water and an approved private sanitary waste disposal system. The rezoning application would change this present present requireynent to allow the water service by individual private wells. Proctor and Redfern submitted a bid of $37,000 to undertake the Orono and Hampton hamlet plans for the town', with Totten Sims Hubicki submitting a price of $37,336.
