StOvouo Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 13, 1988 1800 to 2000 on Sunday All 8 T bars and one cable tow were busy on Sunday at the Oshawa Ski Club east of Kirby with an estimated 1800 to 2000 out on the slopes for excellent skiing. The club now covers 90 percent of the slopes with artificial snow and has new improved chalet facilities in at least two major areas. The club has a Pee Wee program with an enrolment of 600 which we understand operates Saturday mornings mornings with instructors. Night skiing also proves popular being held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. A message from George . . MEMORIES! Christmas has come and gone, just as it does every year. For most people a time of rejoicing, for others perhaps, it may unfortunately unfortunately be not so happy, but each in their own way must surely have memories, (like Scrooge, with his Christmas Past). May I indulge your attention for a brief period and recount some of mine? They probably won't interest you, but they will make you sub- conciously, think back and remember what you were doing at these times (if you're old enough!!!). Lets start with 1939 - 1 don't intend intend to go back any further, for that would make me, (and you) feel senile, however at that time 1 was at sea with the navy, and 1 had already seen men who would "not" be celebrating Christmas, but being lucky I was fortunate enough to get home and meet an "old" (no offense offense Lynne!!!) school chum, whom I later decided would make an ideal wife (of course she didn't OUR TOWN Bringing you news, hints and 'What's Happening Downtown and area by the D.B.I.A. But as you all now know, she finally did ..decide to make the best of a bad deal, and mat t ied nie. Bui I lull came later. I he following year. ! found myself spending Christmas in Aden (which is located at the southern end of the Red Sea. Temperature around 95 °F - no snow, or Santa Claus there!!!). Twelve months passed, and I was now in the Northern Hemisphere, to be precise at the North Cape of Russia, the Kola Inlet, (as you ex"matelots" who were unfortunate unfortunate to sail those waters, would know)! To be polite, it was a lousy Christmas. The following year, believe it or not, I managed to get home to Blighty (and "she" said yes, so 1 got married in the bargain). However, my next ship took me to the other side of the world, and I spent the following Christmas in Australia (one year you freeze to death, - the next one you melt) ! ! ! Ah well - fate is indeed fickle. To cut a long story short, the war ended ended and life became rather dull, until 1 was "fortunate" enough to be transferred to the Commando's. Life once again became exciting, and after graduating 1 was sent to the Middle East, Malta to be exact and Lynne and our first daughter joined me. Unfortunately I was shortly posted to Palestine, (now Israel) but not before we had a Wonderful Christmas there "together"! Ask Lynne sometime how all my J.N.C.O.'s smuggled hçr away, from me on Christmas night and I didn't see her for hours. But she loved it and had a wonderful wonderful time. ■ Finally the "wars", were over and we got back to England for a couple of years, but we've both always wondered, what's 'over the next hill? What's around the next corner? corner? How can we make our life style better? How can we give our daughters (two of them now) a better better life? The obvious answer was iCanàda. We've been here now for thirty-five years, and wouldn't change a minute of it. In fact, we're looking forward to the next thirty- five!! Aren't 'I the optimist? But we Wouldn't change it for the world, and believe me I've seen most of it. But finally we're home!! Even our English relatives say "we've got it made". How little do they realize the truth in that remark. Happy New Year Everyone!! Lynne & George Health Risks Higher for Women Smokers The facts are staggering. Heavy smokers, particularly young women, pay a high price for their smoking. In addition to double the risk of lung cancer and heart disease, women smokers are likely to suffer a "million and cfne more ills" than their non -sfnoking counterparts. Consider these facts: • 3 timesas much emphyse- ( ma and chronic bronchitis • 75 per cent more chronic sinusitis • 50 per cent more peptic ulcers • more difficulty conceiving • parly menopause • higher incidence of osteoporosis • increased risk of strokes when combined with birth control pills • lung cancer will soon kill more Canadian women each year than breast cancer Dr. Andrew Pipe, Co- Chairman of Physicians for A Smoke-Free Canada, advises women who want to quit to visit their family physician. "They can work together as a 'quitting team' to overcome nicotine addiction," he says. cSaffiot2 ^dooct da.te.zLng prepared by; Stanley & Deborah Johnson R.R. 1 Orono, Ontario (416) 983-9822 Enquiries warmly welcomed Sick of....
